Parkston, SD
Got a new set of drivers for our old KW and thinking about tossing golf balls in to balance them. A truck forum said 3 in each wheel does it. Anyone try this yet? TIA.

I talked to the local tire dealer and he said he had a truck in once that tried that and was changing the steer tires and the golf balls had turned to white powder inside the tires.

Get Equal, it is the little beads these guys are talking about. You can get a baggy of them for each tire, you put them in the tire, mount the tire on the wheel, and in a little travel time, the bag disentegrates and the beads balance the tire every time it rolls. Its the easiest way to balance truck tires. Plus you never have to pull them off and rebalance the tires like you would with the weights on the sides of the rims.

40Dodge, most places do not have a balancer that can handle semi tires. For a long time they were not balanced.

Plus it's pretty challenging to balance a Dayton wheel off the vehicle and have any success.

It's baloney. If the balls don't disintegrate they wear out the insides of the tires. I'll bet it is enough of a problem tire companies won't warranty the tires if you throw junk inside them.

Someone makes a product that comes in an 8 oz bag that looks like sand. I think it is some kind of smooth glass beads that are sold for balancing semi tires. I have used it with no problems but I don't know how much it really helped.

I guess I'll show my lack of semi-truck knowledge here, but can you not use wheel weights like used on a car or pickup. I'm sure there is more weight involved.....just a stupid question from someone that does not know jack chit about semis!!

They are little beads that will balance any kind of wheel. I use them on my motorcycle, about 2 oz. per wheel. No need for wheel weights. I've read where lots of trucking companies use them with good success. You can put them in thru the valve stem or when mounting a new tire.

Make sure you are using filtered valve cores when using equal. We use to use it and quit, about 90% of our low and flat tires were from the valve cores not sealing after checking tire pressure.

If you don't use the filtered cores, when checking tire pressure always make sure to blow a little air in the tire after checking to clear out any junk. It's habit for me now and do it on everything. We got into trouble when the mechanics would check without the filler hooked to air.

The tire company put the balancing beads in the tires on my service truck once, It was terrible to drive, every time I stopped it vibrated badly for a couple miles until they found the spot they needed to be, The tire store manager and I went around and around about this for several weeks, He said it couldn't be the beads causing it but could not explain why it would be OK and then vibrate after I had stopped and did not want to take them out,

I told him that he could take them out as I wanted and keep my business or I would have another shop take them out and they would get my business, He finally reluctantly dismounted the tires and vacuumed the beads out and then spin balanced the tires, they ran as smooth as silk after that.

I have a good friend that runs several trucks hauling livestock probably putting close to a 100k per truck per year. He swears by the golfballs. He said never put an even number in a tire. He said that 11-13 per tire works best. I tried it once, worked pretty good at hiway speed but seemed to shake pretty bad slowing down to a stop and taking off from a stop. I finally took them out and put equal in. Tried some of those wheel/tire balancers that mount on the studs between the wheel and hub and wasn't impressed.

The Breakfast Club
It's funny how you'd think those 'centra-matic' wheel balancers you refer to would balance and straighten out any out of whack tire. But when I put some on my truck, it stated in big bold letters on the pamphlet that those things won't 'right' any bad wheel, bad tire or anything like that. They're more for tire wear and a SLIGHT imbalance problem. I've got them all around my truck, to improve tire wear hopefully...but I do so much stopping/starting and turning that my tires are worn out around 100k miles. Plus I bought a different truck with 525hp, so I hope that high hp doesn't burn off the tires like the OP was saying...cause I'm not bashful with my right foot.
