this would be like if ferrari quit making cars so they could push their line or tire stems lmao. serously though why scapers i would have thought they would went to make disc harrows and planters . Scapers seems like a odd market to go into and i dount the could make tractors again since case owns their name .Are the 2 steiger brothers still alive ? never mind read they were killed in a plane crash......

The 80's happened. From what I read, their factory was operating at something like 30% capacity. Everyone tightened up the belt, so sales of big 4wd tractors plummeted. Big Bud the same thing. Since this is basically all they did, they went kaput. Sold to CaseIH, which would have had a more steady cash flow despite hard times because of a more varied equipment line/widespread appeal. Niche manufacturers I think are always more successful when times are good and vulnerable in bad, comes with the territory.

I agree about the 80s but what killed Big Bud initially was Twin Disc and a little bit of mismanagement.  In the early 80s Big Bud had orders for 100 tractors and to build them they borrowed money when interest rate was at 18% to build the tractors for the upcoming year.  They put in the order to Twin Disc for the trannies.  Twin Disc at the time was in the middle of retooling their factoy or something along those lines.  But they assured Big Bud they would get the transmissions in time.  It never happened.  So here is Big Bud with a 100 tractors built with no trannies and a loan to pay off.  And farmers started canceling orders.  Keep in mind Big Buds in those days were over $100,000 new.  Took Ron Harmon, the owner of Big Bud at the time, over 20 years to recover from that.

He managed to sell them after awhile.  I can't remember all of the details because it was a pretty complicated story but they filed for Chapter 11 and Miessner's ended up buying some of the assets.  When Ron sold some land to Walmart 4-5 years ago, for a new store in Havre, he told me he was finally out of that mess.  Ouch

Sad story there, but it happens. Plus there was no real remedy according to Wisconsin law for the situation. I've read that diposition online.

Thanks for the info Steiger Man! I believe a 525/50 in 1981 was around $160K or more. A lot of money in those days.

Doug Steiger is still alive, but has nothing to do with Steiger MFG Inc any more. Bryan Steiger, the only other living male Steiger from the family, owns Steiger MFG. Morris or Maurice, I've forgotten the spelling, was Bryan's dad. Morris along with two sons and a neighbor were killed in the plane crash. The scrapers are built where the first 125 Steiger tractors wee built, but the original buildings burned down around 1985.

The Toreq scraper line, IS the Ferrari of dollied ejection scrapers.

I was just up to the Steiger Farm last fall and picked up a couple of tires for my scraper. Each time I go there, I am surprised at the amount of product that they send out the door from their small facility. They do make scrapers and very good scrapers in my opinion. They were about half done with an eighteen yard machine when I was there. Any one who has used a scraper in heavy, sticky valley soils has to appreciate what it would take to utilize a machine of that size.

I have an older Ashland 16 yard scraper that i think is a very good scraper and you can get parts easy.

Bryan and his crew are doing an excellent job and build a high quality scraper. They also do very good custom fabrication work. I would recommend them personally on both counts.
