Subject: RoGator 854 Question

Northeast Missouri
Just purchased a a 1997 RoGator 854 this Spring. I have a question about the 2" ball valve that is between the flowmeter and boom control valves at the rear of the sprayer. I see there is a bypass line that tees off between the flowmeter and ball valve. The line then bypasses the ball valve and then goes through a regulator back into the line after the ball valve to the boom control valves. What is the purpose of the bypass line and regulator? Are there some adjustments I need to do with both the ball valve and regulator?

Mine does not have that on it. Did yours have a injector on it before you got it? Might be some of the plumbing for it. On mine just past the flow meter there is a tee where I have my injector hooked up. There is some similar plumbing as you described for it. Maybe they left the plumbing if it had one. I can get a picture of mine if you need it.

My first season I didnt know what it did and ran valve open. I now know its to be used for lower flow rates to force some product through the bypass to create some back pressure. helps keep your rate stable with low rates and slow speed. play with the valve to get get the best position

kholman is correct, use it for lower gpa applications.

Is that a option? My doesnt have anything plumbed in by the flowmeter. Out of the pump it has a 2 inch line that runs back to the tank and I adjust it for lower pressures or to help mix the tank. Is that the same deal.

It is mounted on the back of the machine by the boom lift, I will try to get pictures of it up this afternoon.

A couple of these other guys are right, it's for small gap. I've had my 854 for just part of last season and now this one. When the tech was out to address some small problems, I told him about my inability to hold constant my gap, I was trying to spray 4 gallons per acre, had to go to manual override. He told me about the bypass, I haven't had time to mess with it to see the results. Brian nwIL

This is looking from the rear of the sprayer just to the right of the lift ram.

Thanks for the picture. That is the exact bypass line and regulator setup that is on my RoGator. What is the GPA operating range with the regulator? I run a speed between 6 and 7 MPH and will apply 17.3 GPA and 10 GPA.

I run 8 gpa at about 10 mph with it open, if I am in tougher going I will close it some to keep my pump pressure up. I haven't messed with it much after switching to the Deere Rate Controller.

We were told by a rep to have that 2" valve 1/4 to 1/2 turned off.

That is a low rate kit. When you are spraying closer to 4-6 GPA at 15-20MPH, this is when you would want to play with the valve as to keep a constant pressure and flow to your nozzles. The bypass can be used for when you are applying less than 4 GPA when the large 2" ball valve can not be squeezed off enough to keep constant pressure and flow.
If you are spraying in the 4-10 GPA range, you will probably want to try to close the valve to the 2 o'clock position and feather back from there until you reach your desired pressure.
