How do you set the linkage lengths for the shift lever on a '71 4020. On one we replaced the parts in the shift lever mechanism and now will pop out of the lower gears (3-5-7-8) and the other 4020 we bought is very hard to shift out of reverse.

Disconnect the lever from the rod down by the battery box. Put the transmission in the gear you want and adjust so that the rod fits in the hole in that lever. If it continues to pop out out may be have to replace the spring behind the detent which is in the same area. Make sure the shift lever is tight to the transmission case so that the shift cam isnt sloppy. Clear as mud?

As far as the one shifting hard.....Is the clutch adjusted properly?

The 4020 with the reverse problem.... The clutch is adjusted. It only shifts hard coming out of reverse, almost have to kick the lever to get it out. but it goes in fine except for sometimes it pops out of gear when i first put it in to reverse. It shifts just fine in and out of all other gears.

Pull the detent out and have a look at the detent plate and the detent. An old approach was to replace the detent with a ball and socket detent from a 2010 transmission.

And while the link is disconnected look for wear of the end of the link and the hole it runs in. If that's elongated you will have trouble shoving it into gear and pulling it out because the throw is limited by the mechanism in the dash and the link wears on both ends.
