Subject: OXBO Merger

This year we're looking to trade in the Krone hay rake and get a merger instead. The Krone rake is good, but on the third or fourth cuttings, you have to set the rakes real low to be able to pick up the short hay and we end up getting a lot of dirt too which tears up our chopper. Did some asking around and sounds like the best way to avoid that would be with a merger. Found two of the best brands out there are either OXBO or ROC mergers. Found a nearby dealership that currently has a used OXBO for sale so I was wondering what kind of experiences people had with either of those. Is the OXBO a good one? Do you think we'd be happy with it?

Is the Oxbo merger you are looking at a 2 windrow into 1 or is it the Avalanche? (3 seperate pickups with belts that can go both ways). A lot of the earlier ones (2 individual pickups into 1) have been replaced with Avalanches. I have ran an Avalanche for a dairy in the area and they are the only way to go.

I think the one we're looking at has the three seperate pick-ups. I know it's a 30-footer. Would that make it an Avalache? I have the name, number and the person to talk to at the farm that traded it in so I might call and find out how many acres they've done, how well it worked for them, and why they traded it in, problems they had with it, etc. The salesman said the machine is in excellent condition as it's an '08 unit and they traded in on the next OXBO upgrade that does 34 foot.

Make sure it is the newer model which i think feeds better from the teeth onto the belt. I think the older model has the belt close to the same height as the teeth. On the newer ones the teeth are a little higher than the belt so it feeds better.

The 310 is the old model and the 330 is the current model. I was looking at a used 310, but after I realized how many improvements were made to the 330, I ended up buying a new 330.

We used a 30 ft Oxbo for 2 years now. Has H&S before which worked quite well but we felt the were not built as good as the Oxbo. The Oxbo has a heavy frame and generally built quite well. There is maintenance on the head as the bearings wear out on the bars. I we had feeding problems in oatlage and slippery grass. We use them instead of rakes as a lot of our soil are light and rake puts to much sand in the hay destroying your chopper knives. Also if you have stones a rake is a no no. Ours is the 310 model which as has been replaced by the 330 which has addressed some of the problems I mentioned. Our dealer offered us what we paid for it for the 330 but it still was going to 50 grand to trade. We said no as generally ours works very well for what we do which is 99% alfalfa haylage.
