Subject: Serial number search on a Cat 45?

Quincy, IL

I'm looking at a 1995 Cat 45.   The owner has owned it for 3 yrs and doesnt know the history before him.  I called 2 Cat dealers and gave them the serial number and nothing came up, other than  a few parts he put on it.   They both told me they couldnt get prior history because of merger with Agco, and I would have to go through an Agco dealer to try and find out more?

Also,  on the serial number it has the second  "O"  X'd out and an "P" above it, and an "1" below it.   Neither Cat dealer knew what that meant.   The owner said it meant that it had been updated at one time?

                              P

Serial number     DROO142

                              1

Any suggestions on finding more info on the tractor?

Thanks!

that is one of the 1st CH45 produced in 95'. I think they are shining you on about not being able to run a SIMS report. The SIMS system is CAT system not an AGCO system. They should be able to tell you a lot about this machine up until 2001 at least. I suspect they dont want to take the time to help you out. I have never seen one with a serial number lik you are talking about. The CH45's started out 1DR and the CH55 started out with 7DM, both of these changed once CAT started producing their own machines in Dekalb. The CH55 then started with AEN and I cant remeber what the CH45 changed over to.

I agree with bushton. All CAT serial numbers started with a number followed by 2 letters and 5 numbers until the later models, then it was 3 letters followed by 5 numbers. See if you can find another serial number on their or try getting the engine serial number and serch that way. Maybe they can match the machine serial number to the engine serial number.

where are you reading the serial number off of. there should be a stamped serial numberin the cast rear housing just below the hyd couplers on the right hand side. It will be on the flat spot that collects dirt and grime, this is one redundancy location. See if that matches up with the other serial numbers you are talking about. If nothing else pull the serial number off of the 3116 and have it ran, it will tell you what it orginally went into, if it is the orginal engine.

The owner said that the number was  in front of the radiator,  stamped on the main frame.    Had to raise the hood to see it.   It does start with a 1.           SN        1DROO142

Thanks for your input

I typed in s/n 1DR00142 on CAT's warranty screen (SIMSi) and it says: "Sorry, there was no Sales Information found for Serial Number 1DR00142"

Then one paragraph down, it says: "Sorry, there is no Service Information found for Serial Number 1DR00142"

Now, I don't use this warranty system with the truck mechanic stuff I normally do, but I know that this is the area (SIMSi) that our shop clerk and warranty personnel use.

The other CAT dealer was probably looking at the same screen.

So whats wrong, am I trying to use the wrong number? Or is something up with this machine? Just want to be informed before I make a decision.

Thank you

I work on truck engines only.

Our heavy equipment shop is 3/4 mile up the street, so I am not really around heavy equipment or any Ag equipment.

I can tell you that the S/N Prefix of "1DR" is a CAT 45 Challenger machine.

It probably has something to do with the last 5 digits.

I did try 1DR0142 (only one zero), but the computer automatically changed it to 1DR00142.

More than likely there wasn't any warranty work done on this machine. Maybe never had any problems or never had it fixed at a CAT shop. It is required if repaired at a CAT shop to list the failed part on the service record system that CAT uses or the dealer may be denied the warranty coverage.
