Subject: Rebuilding JD Rephasing Cylinders

Ok panhandle
Any hints, knowledge, or exprience in rebuilding cylinders on a 637 disk? It has rephasing cylinders that is very common on many deere applications looking at the part numbers. I have 3 out of the 4 cylinders on the ground leaking so guess i will start with the one leaking down the worst. I have no external leaking just leaks down 2 to 3 inches when raised then wont rephase correctly and plows unlevel. I have never taken apart cylinders like this but heard it can be a challenge so any info would very helpful. Deere dealer told me with the way all of those cylinders phase together it could still only be one leaking even though three leak down but i am not real sure if that is correct.

Thanks BG

The one settling may not be the problem since they are all hooked together.

Your dealer should have a tech manual for it & there is a chart in there to help determine which one is the problem. I will forewarn you, the kits are expensive ($175) & they can be a bear to get apart. My barrel was pitted, so I had to get a new cylinder to the tune of $600. They don't sell just the barrel for the one I have. The new one is a much better design anyway, water can't get in the end like mine could.

In general they are no different than any other type of cylinder except for a little inch long slot or equivalent in the barrel near the end it is supposed to rephase on.

The hardest part of it is figuring out which cylinder is actually causing the problem. My dealer had a flowchart to help decide which cylinder to fix first, it was usually pretty accurate. If your dealer doesn't have the bulletin, try calling another dealer.

Are those the cylinders that you have to twist the wire out of? They can be tough if they are rusty, lots of penetrating oil and some heat is sometimes the only way.

Yes we have the wire, so far no luck but haven't tried heat, letting it sit all night with kroil oil soaking the wires, will try again tomorrow. Thanks for the information.

I have had consistenly poor results rebuilding them. Go to surpluscenter.com and look under rephasing cylinders. Last fall I bout the four lift cyl's for a 29'3" 637 for $69 ea for the wings and $89 for the center. They were green, had JD part #'s, and fit right on. Deere was almost $2000 for the four. Put two on and the other two are in the parts shed.

Thanks for al the replys, it has been very helpful. Havent got any of them apart yet, fought one for a few hours this evening with no luck, lots of pentration oil and try again tomorrow. Found the site you mentioned above and thinking why not? Rebulid kits were 83.75 through, new cylinder through deere was 435 i think, so might as well try these for 72 plus shipping. One question though our wing cylinders have 4.25x8.00 and our center has 4.50x8.00. will it affect anything by putting the bigger cylinders on the wings with out changin them all or does it matter at all? The reason i ask is because we only found the 4.50x8.00 on that site. We were thinkin that it should be fine but not sure.

The cylinders will need to be different sizes, that is how the rephasing works. It is based on the oil volume in the cylinder, and the difference is usually the volume of the rod.

one of the surest ways to check for internal leaks is to retract the cylinders all the way and then watch to see which one drops. But if you have them off the machine there is no way of telling unless you take them apart.
