Subject: Hesston mower conditioner roll adjustment?

Mid-Missouri

We have had this center pivot Hesston 1345? for about four or five years. It has one rubber and one metal roller. The adjustment bolts for the top roller have given fits this season, breaking off once or twice. The top roller bearings went out a year ago, and I replaced them. I think I reversed the top, rubber roller when the bearings went out, so it would wear on the other side a year a year ago. What is the proper way for adjusting the depth of engagement between the two rollers. I am guessing you allow the rollers to fully engage, then slide the bent gauge toward the metal arm, and then adjust the rollers a certain distance away from the bent gauge. How far should it be? Also, when idleing down with it running empty, the machine vibrates, I believe from improper roller adjustment.? I have not been happy with the conditioning this machine does, and I believe a simple rotary mower that doesn't windrow in most cases would dry down faster than this wider machine putting hay in windrows. We do like the windrows tight enough though that one pass with the v rake will flip all portions of the two windrows into one. Thanks.

You are correct in the fact that you bring the rolls together and set the gauge.  If I remember correctly for most crops the spacing is 1/8 of an inch.  You can check this by using an allen wrench and sliding it between the rolls. You want to make sure the measure is the same all the way across the rolls.  As for the vibration I would bet it is the conditioner roll timing.  This can be adjusted by loosening the bolts on the conditioner driveline and rotating all the way one way, and marking the shaft.  Roll it all the way the other way and again make a mark on the shaft.  If you split the difference between the marks your timing should be correct.  You may have to repeat this a couple of times though.

In that photo you can see a sheet metal strip bolted to the top of that stop block for the gap setting. This is the roll spacing indicator.

Paraphrased from the op manual:

First you'll want to make sure the conditioner rollers are timed correctly. Back off the adjusting bolt until the rolls just barely kiss each other, then give it a half turn to open up the gap just a hair. Readjust the roll spacing indicator so it is tightly touching the pivot arm. This will give you a clear and easy indicator of what the roll spacing is. The distance between the indicator and the pivot arm will be the same as the conditioner gap. Factory setting for the conditioner is 0.12".

The hoop is adjusted only after the rolls are set to the factory gap setting. You'll want to look at the conditioner roll tension linkage underneath the deck of the mower. Measuring from the inside of the cam to the inside edge of the block it mounts to, you'll want to adjust the hoops so you get a dimension of approximately 1 inch.
