I was reading articles on this engine being used in the challengers. I understand why Agco went away from them, but did cat quit making them also?  I read they didn't meet EPA regs and then I thought I seen that they did. Just kinda curious,

Good day
A CAT C18 is fiscally the same size block as a C15.....C16...and can be .mixed and match into a C17
Probably the only downside to the 18 is that the liners are a little more prone to electrolysis
Good luck

C18 is still in production and used in many new Cat machines, oil & gas applications, marine, and gensets.

Here's an example
https://www.cat.com/en_US/products/new/equipment/articulated-trucks/...

The "not meeting emissions" is an old wives tale that won't die.

A c18 on a barko tub grinder can make a 1500lb bale of hay go poof. I can watch that all day, very satisfying.

Just installed a new set in one of our tug boats for use on the Illinois river , we’ve got 14 running from 475 to 600 hp
Usually get around 30,000 hrs on them before we pull them out for rebuild . Only weak spot we’ve seen is the lower counterbore liner o rings eat into the block - have to go to the machine shop and get bored and sleeved in that area . Some minor issues with injector o rings leaking also . We also have several Cummins QSK 19-‘s and we have better luck with the Cat C-18’s …..
I’d think the C18 would be an awesome tractor engine ..
No emissions on marine engines till you get over 805hp ..

Very interesting! I wonder why marine gets exempted on emissions in the lower horsepower classes?

Not much on it for drives. Is that a dropbox on the back of engine?

Would it be that a marine running at a steady speed would be cleaner? Just a guess.

Wouldn't they run at varying speeds depending on how much push/speed is needed for the job?

The maritime industry has a very strong lobbying force. Just look at the Jones Act. I am guessing that has something to do with it.

We have copper grid coolers that are recessed in the hull of the boat for heat exchangers- closed system and use antifreeze.
Gearbox is a Twin Disc 5170 marine gear with 5.17:1 reduction.
Don’t have a clue on the emissions issue - like most railroad equipment we run 24-7 - doesn’t make sense why a combine or tractor that runs 2-300 hrs a year has all the emissions and we don’t …marine and railroad have a better lobbying group than AG ???

Is that a JWAC on the left side?

Any chance you could get me a serial number prefix?

TNA prefix
Aftercooler circuit on LH side , JW circuit on RH side
Separate circuit aftercooled …. Takes 2 coolers per engine

If I remember correctly that is the engine that was supposed to be in the much ballyhooed new Big Bud.
Not sure if even one has been made yet.

You can buy a new C15 for trucks again, my understanding anyway. A C15 can be built into a C16, C17, or C18.

Hard to beat those engines, IMO.

I was told the C18 was bullet proof but found out this year that is not completely true. They now have an updated piston to fix this issue. Overall it was a cheap engine to rebuild.

Stock 865c. Old design was a two peace piston. Updated design is a one piece piston. I have no pics of the new design because the Cat kit had the pistons already in the sleeve. A friend from church had this happen under warranty twice.
