SE South Dakota
Watching Larsen Farms U-tube, sure seems like it would be nice. Any opinions? I would likely not need a car lift if I had a pit.

Thanks, Jim J

If you think that would be nice to have one, put it in now rather than trying it in later.

If you put one in. Mark around it well. Have very solid cover pieces. Check your insurance. Or make sure it has never come up.

We love ours. It gets used for all kinds of things we never even thought of.

I vote no on the pit. Maybe on the lift.

Ask your insurance what they think of them. A good 4 post hoist and some heavy duty ramps might make more sense.

We thought about it, filled it back in. Neighbor built his shop 10 years ago with the provision to take a slab out and dig through hole. He put in a hoist and has never had the inclination to put the pit in

I have one in my 20 year old shop.

Looking back I wish now I had made it longer. We use it all the time for stuff you wouldn’t think of.

We put a 60’ pit in our shop. I started using it before the building was up.
It is used constantly.
We made sure we got good drainage around the outside of the pit.
The older I get the happier I am that I have the pit.

My struggle was how my shop was laid out it was going to be tough to have it and still have all the floor space I wanted to fold out planters, etc.

In the end, I bought a set of mobile column lifts and don't regret not putting a pit in at all.

We put in a 40’ long pit. Zero regrets. We do run a commercial trucking business out of our farm location. There’s a truck over that pit 25 days out of the month getting something done. You’d be surprised how often we run something “over the pit” for a quick 5 minute peak from the bottom up. Put a drain in the bottom of it and have a provision to blow waste oil out of the pit into storage.

I do think they have a place ^ as in this posters place...But what goes in below has to come out. Then there is the extreme danger of falls and burns.Lots of issues of gases dropping in and then a spark or static. Not good.I know I would fall in ,,say walking around the front or back of a unit being worked on that does not cover the length,,even if you have covers this would happen to me,,employees or visitors? ..just like running your shins into a receiver with along hitch on it.I forgot it was there,,but you may not be able to have it happen again, with a big fall.I was thinking of one maybe 20 years ago,,my retired fert guy told me of his dads demise by fire in his service pit.Told me he could hear the screams from his bedroom(he was 9).Died after horrible pain (from burns )for many days,,I actually near cry when I recount what he told me of.But they have their place if vented and drained and you service heavy long units often.

I have a pit in our shop. It is very handy for a lot of things but I have several issues with it. First it is never the right depth. You could put an adjustable floor in but that will cost a fortune. Second it is very hard to clean because any oil spills ect.. must be carried up the stairs with a shovel. And the last thing is that I have this hole in the floor that I need to work around. We use it enough that a cover is not practical. So from my experience I would seriously look at a lift. You can buy vehicle lifts for not a lot of money and for less then the cost of a pit you can buy post lifts for semi trucks that can be rolled in the corner when you are not using them. I realise that lifts are not without their own problems but that is my advice....... Take it for what its worth!!

No. Put in floor anchors though. So you can latch on and straighten stuff out.

60 feet long plates on top forklift can remove. Extra deep would rather stand on a short box if need be then bend over.. Slopes to the center for drainage if washing out. Stairs goes down along side to enter. Sump pump under stairs Air vent sucks at low point when lights are turned on
