Looking at a 7820 and 7830 JD -both are about 2 hrs away so not seen in person yet. I like the 8.1L in the 7820 as its a very tough reliable engine, but I do like the 7830 having autosteer ready ability. I do hear some issues about the 6.8L having various engine head / valve problems which scares me a little - maybe thats more of an issue with the 6.8L in the 9570 combines though?

My main question - Are the cabs different on these two machines? They have the same "look" on the outside but notice a few difference with the inside (steering column). I have a 7810 JD now so I'm familiar with that cab style.

I had 7820, brother has 7730. I'd say same tractor as far as cab. Wish I didn't sell the 7820, but......

I'd add the steering valve if you liked the 7820. That 8.1 is one good motor and way oversized for that tractor.

We’ve had a 7800 power shift. 7820 with 20 speed power quad, and 7830ivt. I don’t remember much difference in the 20 versus 30 cabs.
I really liked the 8.1
For reliability I’d take the 7820 with 20 speed.
What transmissions are in the ones you are looking at?
Not sure what you plan to do with it but consider a 8000 series

Transmission - I'm looking at 20 speed quads on each. Not interested in IVTs. Will be used for planter and various jobs like mowing ditches, etc.

One thing I do like about the 7830 is it has 46" rubber vs 42" on the 7820

Check hydraulic pump capacity as planter upgrades can require more flow.
20 series will have hydraulic levers, 30 could be switches which are nice.
If you ever put a grain cart on it we have the heavy optional drawbar hitch that fits either one for sale.
Newer always has a few more features that are standard.
Make sure to ask what ptos they have.

id take the 30 but they come with a few more gremlins, injectors in engine can cause issues so always run a injector cleaner in the fuel. I'd want the IVT so id get the command arm on the seat but that's just me. The side console just seemed awkward in the 7820-30 style cabs, its fine on the 7810--hyd handles are more ergonomic to me. Unless you find a late 7830 quad with the elec.SCV's, there were a few of them out there.

If everything is similar hrs and condition the 7820 will have a simpler engine setup. The cabs are the same. We have a 7830 and it has had injectors around 3500 hrs and several turbo actuators and fuel common rail repairs. I like the tractor just not as simple because it is teir 3.

Had a 7920 with ivt was very reliable. Traded it for an 8130 just for more heft. Would have no issue running one again in the right situation.

I had both versions, my belief is the 7820 has a better tried and true motor. The 7830 seemed it would pull a little better but it had 46 inch rubber compared to 42 on the 7820. I had a lot less problems, 7830 had engine fan problems, lost hydraulic pump on it at 500hrs and the blasted injectors no different than the 8030 models. I still have my 7820 and the 7830 got trade for a 8260R. Was glad to see it leave!
