The 2’ long plastic bale knife is what I use. Give the bale a few whacks to loosen up the netwrap if it’s froze then cut it off. Ideally the bale is ~6” in the air so you can peel all the wrap off at once

I don't have much problem unwrapping them. Cutting the net can be a problem. I don't have frozen bales as much as you do, but I do once in a while.

Usally end up dropping them on the icy side for the single use bales for the barn. The ones I’m gonna grind I will set out a few days ahead of time north to south. Just have to watch the weather and most of the time the sun has enough power to melt the ice.

Just use the knives with the throw away blades to cut the net wrap. Don’t think it takes but 30 seconds if there is no ice to remove the net wrap

It takes 5 seconds to wrap them up hands free. 15 minutes and a mixed up frozen mess to take it back off and clean it all up each.
There has got to be something more automated. Right?

Shouldn’t take 15 minutes. If you want automated check out hillco netwrap remover or get a hay buster/grinder.

Can also use a hay spear through the very top edge of the bale and lift up to rip the wrap.

Nope, Ill peal it off by hand before I do that. The Hay Buster tub grinder makes it disappear but puts Velcro like mesh in the gut....

It catches some of it but not 100 % of it… plenty of wrap escapes. Sure the odds are pretty good in your favor you will never have a problem with a cow dying from ingesting wrap but sometimes things aren’t worth the risk. I can spend a few minutes taking wrap off before I grind hay or put out bedding with the processor

We line wrap a couple layers of plastic on what we think we will use when frozen. Have a bale slicer that cuts' up from the bottom and if you get good at it it will clamp the net and plastic from the top.... Dennis

just go to this website www.schiradoinventions.com   is a video to watch and a contact info. not trying to sell this simple net wrap cutter. if you can weld you can make it for a few dollars. there is a few different ways to use this. just ask i would be glad to explain. i don't believe in wasted hay so i grab the net wrap with my grapple forks peel off the wrap and frozen hay then drop it in a bale feeder. the cattle will rummage through it cleaning up the good hay leaving the net wrap in the feeder. after several feedings just lift up the feeder and grab the balled up net wrap and pile it in your hay yard or pit and burn it in a place and time when conditions are favorable. this idea has been a game changer for me.

We used to run 2 twine balers, getting all the twine off when it's frozen on is even worse than netwrap. No way I'll ever go back

Can’t think of a scenario where twine is better than netwrap…. That’s one of the few things I won’t ever give up.

Well one for sure is preplacing bales and moving the feeders by hand with a poly split wire every 3-4 days, and esp. with freezing rain, I can't believe that you can let cattle eat it, if it were me they would all be dead by spring.

+1, the cheapest fully serated steak knife you can find. Trim it to length so not too long. Works great.

Tip them up a few days before you need to feed them and let the sun melt it off.

Correct answer! We always put round bales on ends, frozen side to sun. Same with ton bales, sun will melt them off enough. Also can drop rounds or tons a little when ricking them out to melt. Knocks snow off helps loosen them. We always put out a weeks worth or two to melt sure speeds up feeding. If doing rounds you can roll them a bit with balebed or tractor before cutting net or twine. Also helps loosen them up.

We set the bale on its flat side, tip spear vertical and press it into the netwrap and run up to shatter the ice. 3 or 4 swipes on the iciest part. This is with skidloader so you have fine control. Dropping it from full height on the icy part helps, too.

We use a Dewalt 4.5 in. grinder with a thin cutoff wheel while the bale sits on its flat side. About a minute job at best.

Lift the bale as high as you can, drop it on its face to break the ice on the net wrap. We use pallet forks to feed, so we pick it up after dropping with the forks, take a box cutter and cut as low as possible and peal the net wrap up and around. Tie the loose net wrap to the pallet fork, drop the bale in the feeder with the fork and if you do it right you should have all, or just a little remaining on the bale in the feeder that you use the pallet fork to fish out.

Feed 3-400? bales of feed over the MN winter this way.

made a net wrap cutter and ice beater with an old wooden sledge handle, make a narroww cut in end, slip a knife section in, drill holes for a couple bolts. sharpen the section as needed. its a hammer to beat the ice loose. helps but placing bales for bale grazing while its warm and dry is the best
