Subject: Case 1845C Hydraulic Oil

Kansas
I just recently purchased a Case 1845C Skid Steer. I needed to replace the bucket tilt cylinder seals, and figured while in that neighborhood I would go ahead and replace the hydraulic oil & filter.

However the manual & a sticker above the hydraulic reservoir fill cap indicates using 10w30 or 10w40 motor oil. I had planned on using Star Fire transmission/hydraulic oil.

So is there a problem with using hydraulic oil, versus engine oil? Is it because if a hydraulic motor leaks into the chain reservoir they want the same viscosity oils?

When we had them we always ran engine oil with the recomended additive. Can't remember changing the oil on purpose. Would just add more when needed. Always a hose leak or something to change it for you. Just change the filter on schedule.

Chain cases don't really care what oil is in them. Anything is better that the water that gets in on its own.

I would suggest asking a Case dealer. I have an 1845C also, for years now. Has been an excellent machine. The first time I changed hydraulic oil and filter,
10W-30 with a special additive was recommended /specified. I can't remember what year my machine is, but it is a late model. (2004 maybe?).
Two years ago, I again changed hydraulic system oil and filter. I consulted my 'go to' Case technician, and this time he said just a high quality 10W-30. No additive necessary. He stated oils are much better than years earlier, and Case no longer specifies the additive. (It was expensive, but pumps and motors make that stuff cheap).
Having said above; again, I still recommend you consult a Case Dealer. That's what I would do.

I’ve got one with 9000 hours on it and for most of that, it’s had whatever I was using in my tractors transmissions. Usually Chevron 1000 fluid, JD HyGard or similar. While I suppose I could just use an AW46 hydraulic oil, I don’t keep it for anything else.

I used to have an 1825, and it called for 10W30 or 15W40 engine oil, along with their additive. If I remember right, you put in one little jug of additive per 5 gallon bucket of oil.

I don't know what to say, but unless you share attachments from your skid steer with other implements, I'd just use the 10W30 oil with additive. That way you know it will be 100% compatible with whatever oil will be left in your system.

10w30 or 0w40 if you keep it outside in winter a lot

You can't get the additive anymore, so just engine oil.

The reason Case recommended engine oil was to keep it simple, that way you only need to stock 1 oil. The difference between 30 and 40 is negligible. Use which ever oil you prefer including hydraulic oil. The pumps, valves, motors, and cylinders don't care which oil you use as long as it's clean and free of water.
