What’s the good bad and ugly of these? Friend of mine has one that’s been sitting 10 years runs like a top. He wants double scrap yard value for it. Runs like a top, but ugly.

I’m looking for something better than the 4640 to farm some deep sand with. Probably looking at 400 hours a year. The HP fits my equipment and the traction would be a major upgrade. Can you row crop? I have 8 row tool bars and planter.

Oskaloosa, Iowa 52577

We used both a 3788 and a 3588 for several years.

I really liked them.........but we used them as a lightweight front wheel assist, as compared to a heavy duty 4wd.

Planted, pulled 8 row.......chiseled.....everything.......row cultivated.  (just had to learn to make the curves.)

I liked the way the light tractor floated over wet spots.

Downsides..........the hinges had to be watched.  I cannot remember what motor the 3588 had, but as i recall the 3788 had a 466.

(we used to grease those hinges to the point where the mechanic told us to NOT put in so much........had just a pile of grease inside the curtains.)

We dualled the front axes..........just had to watch turning tight.

Again........we did not overload the tractors.  Pulled same equipment as we put behind a 1586 2wd with a 466.

We did not have the repairs that a lot of guys have mentioned..........who knows why.

That’s what I’ve read. You can’t use it like a big 4X4 that’s 250+ HP. I don’t own any equipment big enough for that. But I would probably try to find a 20’ disk and maybe add on a couple shanks to one of my chiesel plows.

I got a 6588 I bought off a member here.............which is a newer 3588, it is impressive on how they put the power to the ground, float over the ground, and can turn narrowed up which pretty much everything with powered front wheels at the time the 2+2 was built can't do. With the way they hook to the ground I can see why they shelled parts out pulling stuff they shouldn't have been, its too bad IH didn't have what the 2+2 was when it ended(7488) when they started, over built to take the abuse, they would have probably been considered a wider success than what they were, either complete wreck or great depending on who you asked.

I have a 3788 that has just under 6000 hrs, I've had it 1300 of those, the pivot pins were shot when I got it and was able to get those, engine had been rebuilt before I bought it, it runs very well. TA I'm sure had been replaced also, no issues there. I like it, bought a 40' Hiniker air seeder and may use the 37 to pull it, pulled a 30' one with no trouble. Dual's only on the rear. It's floats so well over the ground, someone put 20.8x38 tires on it.

I ran a 3388 for years. A 3788 MIGHT only have a 1000 pto, check to make sure if that is a big deal for you. It will also have 3 gears (with a high and low + the TA) instead of 4 gears in the 33/3588.

I planted and cultivated with mine. We had a 12x30" planter then. We only had 18.4x38 tires and duals on the rear and had no trouble turning for a 12 row. With a 8 row, you might have to do a small "light bulb" type turn on the ends.

While the hood in front of the cab is kinda wide for cultivating, the 2+2 actually worked better for cultivating around curves vs a 2wd/MFD. With the 2+2, I kept the front tire the same 4" (or whatever your spacing is) all around the curve or going down straight rows. With the articulation, it followed the rows easier.

The 2+2 concept was a great idea by IH, but was poorly executed. At the time of it's release, there were very few MFDs at least in our neck of the woods and shortly after the 2+2 came into being, the HP race was on and MFDs were much more common.

We had ours turned up to about 170hp. Engine and drive train were great. We had LOTs of hyd pump troubles. I'm a fairly tall guy and my kneecap still hurts from hitting?breaking the key off with my knee getting in and out of the cab.

One area that the 2+2 excelled was on the snowblower. With the engine and fuel tank inside the hood, I never had to use #1 diesel fuel in the winter time. The engine heat kept everything nice and warm. I had a Knipco torpedo type heater with a 90 degree furnace/stove pipe elbow on it and I slip that under the engine and let it heat for maybe 10-15 minutes and by then everything was nice and warm and ready to play. I blew snow one time at -30F with no troubles.

That is pretty much all I use the one I got for these days.................For as long as it seems, it gets around as well as a smaller tractor on the snowblower.

Grandpa had a 3788 he bought new I learned to drive as I grew up, not a bad tractor once you got used to its quirks. Traded it off when I was probably 18 years old. Some days I wish still had it since he had bought it new. We used mainly for tillage and grain cart.

The 4 equal size are really nice for what you are wanting to do with it.

It has 1586 HP with 1086 axle and rear end. The 60 seriers rearends were beefed up and would take what the engine put out.

I assume you mean the rear axle is from a 1086.

IIRC, the front axle is much smaller than that.    Anyone know what the front axle is from?

I know the 33 and 35s had a 986 rear end with the 3.25" axle, did the 37s have a 3.5"? From what I understand the front axle housing and bolster came from Komatsu from their end loaders. Not sure about the differential and finals, then the axle shafts were obviously IH.

They are to be treated as a MFWD tractor, not an articulated 4x4. The entire point of their design was to be a more efficient MFWD, less wheel slip.
