Subject: Calf with Lump on Jaw

Noticed this evening, I’ve got a calf with a golf ball size lump on the side of its jaw? I felt it, and it seemed hard, not like it was fluid filled.

Any ideas what it is and how serious? Treatment recommendations? How urgent is treatment? Would have to contact my vet on the holiday weekend..

Not an emergency. Most on calves that age here break open and take care of themselves. Sounds harsh but sometimes benign neglect is the best policy.

It's probably either an abscess or a tumor. Neither is urgent enough to pay a vet to cut short his golfing time.

Is it in the bone or in the flesh?

How would I tell that? Didn’t seem to move and was pretty firm feeling.

There are 2 kinds of lump jaw,
Soft, you can feel it and move it around, its in the soft tissue around the lower jaw.
You can lance these to the outside Edit- these can become hard then shrink down on their own.
Hard it feels like bone and its in the jaw bone(boney lump jaw)
Call your vet, if its in the bone it will get worse
bacteria in the jow bone itself.
Usual treatment is sodium iodide into the jugular vein, repeated in 10 days
It doesn't always cure it and can come back a yr later.
I would try and get it stopped or it will get worse.
It will eventually become painful for the animal and they will go down hill.

Good to know. Thank you. Would you think that waiting until Tuesday morning to call the vet is fine or should I contact them this weekend?

It's not in the bone. Give it some antibiotics if it makes you feel better and leave it alone.

How can you tell? Just curious.

I’m just fine leaving it alone. Just have never had this before so wanted to check..

I ain't saying it can't happen but I highly doubt it can be in the bone on a calf that young I haven't seen it.

Antibiotics would be a good idea

Lump jaw in the bone their isn't no fixing that it only gets worse.

Not necessary to use antibiotics.

Greater than 90% of those can be lanced and will go away faster. Cow hide is tough and it can take a long time for the abcess to come to a head and rupture on its own.

Usually have thick yellow pus in it. If you are hesitant, you can tap it with a big needle on a syringe to confirm it’s pus instead of blood or serum. However if it’s not pus, it will soon be once you stick the needle through the contaminated hide into what was a sterile pocket before!

Young calves very often get those golf ball size abscesses on their jaw. When they’re on the side of the jaw, there’s nothing dangerous to hit as you’re lancing one. Under the jaw or in the inside, there’s arteries and veins etc that are close so caution is advised.

I usually put on an exam glove and grab a sharp scalpel blade with just about 1/2-3/4 inch of the point sticking out between thumb and forefinger. I slap it into the center of the lump. Once it penetrates the abcess I pull it to slash a large opening. You don’t want to make a small hole!

Okay, thanks. Would an abscess feel fluid filled though? Or do they sometimes start harder?

It didn’t feel like what I would expect an abscess to feel like? (I have never felt one though)

Those ones on the calves’ jaw are usually as hard as a golf ball! Cannot feel any fluid/softness in them. Pus will be very thick usually.

Yup, I usually rope, give a good slice with a razor knife, & shot of LA. Just need to speed up the process for them, instead of it rotting thru the side of their face.

My vet taught this:
With a large 14 gage needle, see if the lump is full of pus. It is quite thick and you may have to squeeze the lump to see anything. If so, it is a soft lump and lancing with a scalpel or very sharp knife will help hasten healing. He also flushed the wound with water and betadine solution. If you see plasma, clear(ish) amber colored fluid, stop and consult a vet. I have no history with this except for a barn cat. He got into a tussle with another Tom and his ear swelled like a pillow. I drained the plasma but the ear healed in a shriveled shape similar to a crushed potato chip bag.

He also warned me to be careful on the animal's head when lancing because a vein may be easily severed. I have lanced 2 with no ill effect, so far so good.

My take away is if I can move the lump, I'll check it with a needle. If it won't move and bone hard I'll see a vet

The ones I had like that all went away on there own quickly. Not saying yours will but doubt you have anything to worry about.

Nice looking calf.
