Subject: GM 6.6 gas engine using oil?

NE mt
Ive had a 6.6 gas for couple years as do some of my friends, they all remark how much oil they use, i suppose mine goes through three or four quarts between changes, im wondering if anyone else has noticed this? Doesnt seem to be at the end of the oil change either, seems to use as much at beginning of a new oil change, just curious as the warranty is about up.

I have a 2022 with the 6.6 gas. It also uses oil. I check it every 1000 miles and usually have to add 2 quarts between oil changes.

Try some 15/40 diesel oil . That will cut back the use a little .

There is a TSB on oil consumption on that engine. Lots of info on oil consumption on the internet.

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2022/MC-10211061-0001.pdf

In it they say 1 quart for 100 gallons of fuel is acceptable to GM. While I don't agree with that, it is GM's warranty specification.

I have a 2020 with about 55k and have not noticed any oil consumption but gonna go out and check it after reading this to be sure.

That’s normal… around a quart every 800 miles or so. That’s what the pickup mechanic at my day job said. They are starting to get a few of them in the fleet. I guess powerful and decent mileage.

100 miles north of the NYC crapper
Guess I better start watching my 23
Had the oil changed earlier at 5000 than recommended at 7500 miles. It’s at just over 9 k now.
Mine sees mostly trailer miles but I did just get back from a 1500 mile trip with no trailer. Was pleasantly surprised with gas mileage running 75-80 most the time. Got around 16 running empty and probably 14 withe about 2600 lbs in the back on the return trip averaging 15 all around. My route included I 80 across PA so it was far from flatland.

That’s about as good as a diesel empty . Good as a 6.7 ford anyway.

Has any of this abnormal oil usage been attributed to machining tolerances?

So I'm curious as to what they are doing to remedy the oil consumption. Seems as there would have to be changes to components and/or tolerance adjustments to components to curb oil usage. Otherwise rebuilding with parts that are the same as what's going in engines using oil will net an engine that is rebuilt using oil.

It would be like rebuilding the old 5.7l Olds diesel. It's a darn turd no matter what!

I'm a bit surprised and pleased with my diesel mileage. Highway mileage is 20-21 empty. Haven't hooked to our 5th wheel camper yet but pulling a 7000 pound skidsteer it gets about 14. Second generation L5P Duramax.

From what I've read on the net lots of engines replaced, sounds like the AFM system lifters and poor machining..

Sounds like GM is going backwards, that's what all the 454 did many years ago.

Don't know anything about the 6.6 engine, but don't sound NEAR as bad as the old 454's. Had a 454 in a '77 Chevy 3/4 ton. If not pulling, and just driving around,- 1 qt. of oil per fill of gas. And the BEST milage I ever got with the 4:56 rear end was 7 1/4 MPG. Under a load, oil consumption was not nearly as bad. Lot's of power and torque, but top end was 86 MPH, but you could get there in a flash.

This is very true but you would think almost 50 years later they'd have it figured out.

My dad had that same 454 in 1977.It drank fuel so fast that on long drives you could visibly see the fuel gauge drop.It had two tanks. He added another in the bed under a tool box.The engine was a piece of work ,,always carried parts with him.

From a post by: "Grumpy Bear"

"I have a theory on these motors oil consumption. For a host of reasons these motors, which are built with really narrow low tension rings are very fussy about cleanliness. Even the newest DEXOS licensed oils still allow a slow build up over time of carbon/varnish around and between the ever so sensitive second and third rings. I don't think they even have to stick. Just fill the 'ditch' in the second ring. There are fewer than a handful of PCMO's with enough natural solvency to prevent this from happening AT THE OEM RECOMMENDED OCI's. The few that do don't have a DEXOS license. People being what they are, protect the warranty first and the motor second. IMHO of course."

He thinks changing oil more often would help, "takes longer to get to the cliff but it falls off faster" is close to his quote in another post.

I have seen and heard on some new cars that 1 qt per 1000 miles is within factory spec. Family members subaru and jeep are both this way. They both trip low oil lights (only down a qt or 2 when light comes on) before an oil change if not careful. Good maintenance they just burn oil. Maybe it's the lighter oil they use now.

Does the 6.6 engine have the dom, afm or whatever it's called, cylinder deactivation.

Thanks,

John

According to this, the 6.6 doesn't have any of the cylinder deactivation variants.

There is no cylinder deactivation system on the L8T.

I can't say whether it has AFM lifters or not, though. Back in the LS days, some non-AFM engines had AFM lifters, but didn't have any provision to activate them. It's possible the L8T might do something similar just for more parts commonality with the other LT engines, but I don't know.

I have a 2020 with just shy of 38,000 miles on it. I use only full synthetic oil and GM filters at every oil change. I can attest it does use oil between oil changes and once even triggered a low oil alarm on the dash. I never notice any smoke and it runs good and pulls good. I have no complaints with the pickup and have been very happy with it. That said it is kind of annoying that it uses some oil. I had a Dodge with he 6.4 hemi before this pickup and it never used oil, just burnt through the fuel.
