Subject: Type of mixer for corn/pellet mix

I feed out lambs with calf creep freeders that have to be filled with an auger. My current program involves using a grinder mixer with out a scale and using a bucket to measure ingredients. I would like to use a mixer wagon with a scale and load out of bulk bins and possibly with my loader. The ration consists of corn, balancer pellet, and pelleted soyhulls. My thought would be to add a feedtruck style auger to a mixer wagon. 1st question. What style mixer, real, paddle, 3 auger, 4 auger, or vertical will do the best with an all grain/pellet ration? 2nd how much hydraulic flow will i need to run a 12-14ft long unload auger? Will i be able to run it off my 4440 remotes? Thanks

Seems like you're trying to make the solution to a relatively simple problem much more complicated than it needs to be.

I had the same thought.

Either trade or put a scale on the grinder-mixer? Is the main problem getting loaded from the bulk bins?

Right. The main problem is loading from bulk bins and id like to be set up to load with a loader tractor in the future from a comodity shed

Unless you're wanting to feed silage, ground hay or something else that won't work in the grinder/mixer or come out of a bulk bin, I'll stick with my original statement.

If it takes too long to fill the grinder/mixer out of your bulk bins because they have small augers on them, put bigger augers on them.

The 8" auger on my DDGS bin will auger put 1000+ lbs/min into my grinder/mixer.    I would think it would do similar with pelleted soy hulls.

Tell me about your DDG bin. I put my in a gravity wagon and they bridge something terrible. I’d like to set a tank and auger to my mixer but am afraid I’d have to fight them every day.

The DDGS bin is just a big old Behlen bin I bought on an auction.    Has a custom made boot on the bottom with a 8" auger stuck in it.

We've done DDGS in a wagon in the past.   That was awful.      It comes out of a feed bin 100x better than a gravity wagon.

Gravity wagons slopes are too flat and have too many corners for using them for ground feed or feed ingredients.    Feed bins are steeper and a round cone bottom doesn't have any corners.

Do you load in the top ? Or do you have a short auger to load into the grinder mixer loading auger?

DDGS goes in the supplement hopper on the back of the grinder/mixer.

These pictures are all of the same setup.   The picture with the vertical auger on the corn bin is the current setup.

The tall bulk bin in the rear is the DDGS bin.   Its nothing special, just a Behlen bin with a custom made boot on the bottom with a 8" auger to drop it into the mixer.     If the DDGS is delivered cool, I rarely have much trouble getting it out of the bin.

If it is delivered straight from the E plant, the DDGS is hot and the weather is hot/humid sometimes it will cause some issues.  The worst thing you can do in that situation is to leave it sit in the bin unused for a week or more.    The sooner you start using out of it the better, pulling some out every couple days helps a lot.

Usually its nothing a rubber mallet won't take care of.

With corn and the pelleted feeds you mention sticking with a grinder-mixer would still be the easiest option in my mind.

But, if you move to a commodity shed and other feed sources that are not friendly to the creep feeders, they may become the problem. At that point my preference would be for a vertical TMR mixer and bunk feeding.

(Disclaimer- This input comes from a lazy, elderly fella using Smidley Stuffers for cattle.)

I mix my textured feed, everything from molasses coated calf starter, to a whole kernel pellet feed, in my reel mixer.
It mixes very well and quick.
Only problem is it doesn’t have an auger for filling feeders or bins.

A lot of guys that use a reel auggies or farm aids for mixing a all grain ration are dumping into a skidloader bucket and filling feeders that way. Or getting a grain auger with a jump auger to fill bins etc.
