On our rides we come upon old abandoned homesteads and signs of old human activity. One of these pictures is a cabin where they incorporated a cave along with a wooden structure where they dwelled. These are located remotely back away from civilization. I can't imagine the work that went into those settlements. We always try to guess what year they were built and what year they were abandoned here in Arizona. Maybe some can chime on this.

Neat pictures Dave, where were you at when you came upon this area? I love observing these kind of sights.

We were riding straight North of Red Cloud Mine yesterday then headed W-SW and came across this old coral. I’d like to know what they were trying to coral way back whenever this was made. The majority of the post were made of tree branches. We did see for the first time in our 6 years of riding down here a Bobcat but didn’t a picture of it. No Bighorn sightings but did see different groups of burrows.

It appears that fence needs some mending. Next time you go out there bring your fencing tools!

Nothing to offer re dates, but it is interesting that these sites aren't plastered with liability disclaimers; "keep out, enter at your own risk" etc. Or do the areas you ride in cover those issues prior to entry?

Those structures made of concrete(?), and even the fencing, make me wonder how they handled the logistics of getting the materials to those remote areas. For that matter even the farms with structures put up in the 1800's and early 1900's are kind of a marvel when you consider what it took procure all the materials and erect them.

Just who owns the land that you are riding around on? These old prospects look very interesting!

Just about all the land we run on is BLM land. There mining claims but I don't have a clue how they work.

We have quite a few old abandoned farmsteads around here. Some that were abandoned in the 40'and 50's still might have a barn and house. Earlier ones may just have a tree or two and a windmill with maybe a foundation.
We always talk about what it must have been like to have so many people around. And, the people probably had the same worries we have today with storms, blizzards, droughts, prices. I'm sure they also experienced good times. People married. Had babies. Life went on.

I was told a lot of these settlement were abandoned in the middle thirties during the dry years. They told me this area never recovered after those years.
