Subject: Bed Cover

Cen. Pa.
Daily driver for the wife and I will now be a 1500 Silverado . I am thinking will need a bed cover . Maybe something that would be easily removable in case you wanted to haul something that would not fit under the cover . Never had a bed cover on pickup looking for advice.

Have one truck with a topper. Put lifting points on it for quick and easy removal. Have another one with a roll up gover, and yet another with nothing.

There are 3 main choices, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. 1 Custom order hard one-piece fiberglass bed cover. Cost around $1,500. 3-4 weeks order time for custom paint to match your truck. Main advantages are they are pretty indestructible, look good, and usually don't leak water into the bed. Disadvantages are cost, they can be in the way when hauling tall items in the bed, and the time to receive the order. The other two choices have more in common. A hard flip-over cover, cost is $1,000 or more, it can be folded to haul big items, truck shops usually have them in stock. The third choice is a soft canvas style. Cost is $300-$400 easy to install, again most truck places carry them in stock, easy to roll up to haul large items, security can be a concern since a person with a sharp object can easily cut the canvas and access the items in the truck bed. Our experience with the different types are, that the flip-over/ roll up covers tend to leak water into the truck bed at times, while the fiberglass hard cover is more like a permanent fixture the doesn't leak water and has a higher level of security.

I have access, has been good for moisture but will not keep dust out, 30 seconds to roll it up behind the cab for hauling bigger items

I just ordered a Truxedo Lo Pro for my new chevy 1500. Old truck 2016 had same cover and lasted 7 years and was still like new. I have had about 4 different ones before and the Truxedo Lo Pro was the best. Good luck. Mine cost 475 plus tax carry out. Easy to install

We have had 2 BakFlip bed covers. Worked great on our 2011 Silverado and now another on a 2019 Sierra.

First place to look is Marketplace. Selling very cheap, seems a lot of people lease a truck and buy some type of cover then return the truck and keep it. Picked up an original Ford cover for $75 this summer, it looked like new. I was not looking specifically for that brand, just the best deal / I found a few miles away. Lots of other brands like Gator, Tux, and more to choose from for 1/2 price or less then new

BAK makes a rigid-roll up that I’ve been pretty happy with.

All depends what your budget is. Both mine and my wife's truck have a tri-fold Tonno pro soft cover. Hers is on her truck all year round, while mine is only on for winter when I take my toolboxes off. I think they're only around $300 and they've held up really well. Even going through a car wash, very little water gets in.

With the cover folded forward, I can still use the gooseneck hitch, and if need be, I can have the cover off in about 60 seconds without tools.

I'm sure the $1,000+ covers may be better in some ways, but I haven't felt the need to find anything nicer yet.

Bak flip hard folding here, only had to take it off once to haul something. Being able to fold it up against the back glass gives you nearly all the bed open to use if needed.

On two trucks there's,,,,, Access soft roll up covers...
The Access cover on the 1999 F350 is 20 years old and the Velcro and the rest of the cover is in perfect condition.
So this year put an Access cover on the Ford ranger. I know you can buy cheaper soft covers but walking through parking lots I see how they hold up so for a few hundred dollars more I'd rather have something I know works perfect after 20 years.
Also have a Bakflip mx4 cover on a truck like some others mentioned ,,,very well built it folds up against the back window which some people I guess complain about but very satisfied with it and the fit and finish is perfect. On the Bakflip mx4 cover there are some dense foam pads that rest against the back of the cab and some adjustable legs that hold the cover tight against the back of the cab. The pic that says tighten with the spinner knob is to snug up the soft cover if it stretches,,,,,,never had to tighten the cover on the f350.
