Did you top the market? Even with the expense of the trucking i think it could be a viable option.

Why sell fats at the sale barn? Couldn't you find a plant to send them too? Just wondering. We sell our calves around 11 months of age and I always wonder about the finishing side of things.

Just seems like direct to the packer would put the middleman's money in your pocket. But maybe I'm oversimplifying it. Trying to learn.

How many captive supplies(and the associated problems) were there when the pack had to go to the stockyards and buy their needs everyday.

The middle man’s money definitely goes in the packers pocket long before yours I can assure you of that.

Auction is the best way to have true price discovery. If everyone sold at auction I believe we would have a more realistic market price. We put some on the fed cattle exchange this summer and they did very well, I was super happy and will probably market all ours that way going forward.

+1, if everyone just sold directly to the packers, what would the price eventually be?

Guys still selling at the salebarns are taking one for the team for sure, and after reading threads on here for years, few realize it and even less appreciate it.

The fed cattle exchange is not a middleman?

Did I say it’s not a middleman? I just said I was very happy with them. The 3$ fee probably made me 75$. Negotiating trade with the packers sucks, most are flakes, hard to contact and miserable to deal with. Sure you can find a good one here and there but then you’re left without leverage just accepting anything you can get. Negotiated trade is not a good thing for the beef industry, there is very little holding them accountable to a fair price. I had 19 different packers bidding on my lots, that’s a lot of exposure for 3$ From literally all areas of the country, Plants in 7 different states. Auction is true price discovery. FYI the heifers I sold in September brought 7$ over where the board was and negotiated trade was less than the board at that time.

I'm just trying to understand, first you make what seemed to be a derogatory statement aimed at all middle men and then you talk one up. Last prices I could find from fce showed 1.70 as the highest, thats a little below 1.77 at Yankton.

Not sure what you thought I meant, Was just stating that the middleman’s cut is usually a fraction of what they are able to get out of the packers. The packer always wins with direct sales, The price at auction being 10$ over that is the proof. I’m all for middlemen and not having to deal with packer buyers, most of them are a pia. If everything was sold at auction we would’ve seen lots of cattle over 2$ this summer. Cash cattle trade for ia last week was 1.64 according to cobalt on feeder flash. I didn’t look that up for reference but 6$ under fce? 3$/hd for 84$ that’s a pretty easy 81 bucks

Fce sells them well but there are way more variables figured into that price, In my case that might be 1000+ miles of trucking. Most are sold fob feedlot. It is also very easy to set a reserve price and you can get exposure to lots of different options. Yorkton would be a more even market as everything is hauled to a central location but again has advantage to the packers that are closest to it. The labor of loading and unloading and the stress on the animals of any sale barn situation.

I don't understand what you meant by saying the middleman's money goes in the packers pocket long before the producers If the middle man is helping us get more money aren't they putting money in our pockets.

Think about it carefully. If you think you are gonna save money by bypassing the middle man, the money you save is going straight into the packers pocket. Not sure how yours spinning this to try and trap lacock in something he didn’t say.

I have never sold fat cattle direct always through the stockyards (when there was one), thru Producers or thru an auction. I just misunderstood lacocks post. To me it sounded like he said middlemen were putting money in the packers pocket and not the producers.

Because you might want them dead tomorrow instead of waiting on pen space for 3 weeks.

Looks like Yankton paid more than the packer last week. Pretty positive.

So which way you going with this? Dark ally and you can’t see? Or the whole neighborhood knows what’s going on out there?
