Subject: John Deere 4995 Swather With A 995 Rotary Header With Pictures Question

Hey Guys, we have a John Deere 4995 swather with a 995 Rotary head. We have been trying to swath down some 5ft to 6ft tall haygrazer. We can only run about 1.3 MPH in this haygrazer. It seems like the problem is that the crimpers are not grabbing ahold of the haygrazer as it gets to the crimpers and it's not feeding it on through, it's like it only feeds big chunks through and it is not a constant even flow. We have widened and closed the crimpers down and it's seems like it doesn't make any difference. We replaced the knifes before we started. All the rotary cutters are set to feed towards the center of the crimper. We have the rotary cutters set to run 3,000 RPM. I was just curious if any of you guys have had any problems like this before with one of these? I will post some pictures below of the Haygrazer we are trying to swath.
Thank you,
JD105404T

NEWI
Not exactly the same problem but we were getting a buildup behind the converging drums and then it would eventually push the crop down in front of the head and leave strips….. just replaced the plates on the drums so will see what happens when we cut next….. but possibly you are having a similar issue.

I had that problem too in certain crops. A 500R fixed that problem.

Tomball,Texas

You need to change the direction of the rotation of a couple of the discs.
They’re probably all turning to the center, turn the third one from the ends to where they turn to the outside

Heys Guys, FJS, I have heard of this, but if you don't mind me asking do you know what the reasoning is for this? If so could you please explain it to me. Also do you know if it talks about this in the operators manual and does it tell you which disk and how to turn them so they run the opposite direction?
Thank you,

I made a post on here several years ago about this, I was having the same exact problem,it was a pull type John Deere but the same design head,I’m trying to find that post and I will link it here

I can’t find the post
if you turn the third disc the opposite direction it will feed more evenly into the crimpers. You just unbolt the disc and rotate it 180° so it drives off the other gear,it’s real simple.
I had a case in 8312 and Hesston 1345 and those discs were every other one turned the opposite direction, laid the hay out more even.
I have a 994 head on 4995 with impellers and all the discs turn to the middle,
I have a 995 head with crimoers that I cut sourgum Sudan with I have them turning opposite directions.
This picture is from the pull type several years ago after I changed the rotation of a couple discs, laid out a flat swath, before it was piled up in the middle like yours.
I can’t find any before pictures.

Hey Guys, FJS, Thank you so much for all the information and trying to find your old post. When you say to turn the third disc 180 degrees, is the third disk the third one in if you are sitting in the cab going from left to right? Also on your 995 header if I am understanding you right the disc are all turning the opposite direction than the ones on each side of it?
Thank you,
JD105404T

On the 995 the outside two discs on each side have the drums on top of them to help move the hay towards the crimpers, the third one is at the edge of the crimpers,it’s the one that needs to turn towards the outside, the rest turn towards the center.
You need the third disc on each side to turn towards the outside.

I used to have an R450 N cut some surghum sudan grass one time that as 6 to 7 feet tall. The faster we went the better it cut to keep the flow going.

My Massey pull type has 10 turtles. Outside two on each end turn towards the center. Other 6 alternate direction of spin.

Colorado
We had the same issue years ago with big sorghum/sudan and that machine. The crop was being pushed under the bottom roller. Welding a 1-1/4” round bar in front of the bottom roller solved it. IIRC Deere made a kit for the issue.
