Like the title says wondering how the Cat 3116 motor does on the farm? I found a tandem with this motor and have never heard of one. Good or bad let me know please. TIA

Not great. Predecessor to the 3126, then C7. All of which are known as disposable, non rebuildable. The 3116 has a glorified Detroit diesel fuel injection system. They are known as gutless. I've been around plenty of the them at work and there are a few still around. In a machine they are prone to running hot which they don't last long running hot.

I have a 3116 in a GMC tandem with an Allison automatic, handled a full load of wheat pulling across the field at harvest. I've hauled over 500 bushels of wheat to the elevator at 60- to 65 mph easily.

That's kinda what I was thinking, also.
Note: I have a 3126E CAT (older larger brother of a 3116 engine), in a single axle; Rated at 250HP with 860 ft lbs torque (= torque rating same as a 300HP unit) 32,000 gross for truck
It does OK, in our rolling hills, but not a powerhouse by any means

We had a 1995 motorhome with a 3116 and Allison 3060R transmission. It was rated at 250hp/650ft lb torque. It pushed the 28000# rig around pretty well. The power rating would most likely be much lower in a truck application. Special tools are needed to set the injectors. They are only 404 cu in, 6.6 liter.

Kinda halfway between a cummins 5.9 and a DT466, fine for what they are. In trucks they were rated 170-2??, higher in boats, firetrucks maybe RV's. They were terrible in boats, just fine in firetrucks and most other uses. If you have to do head work, you'll wish you'd got a cummins or international, but if it runs nice you'll probably never touch it.

the main thing is you have to change the oil more often then other diesels to keep the injectors happy other than that and 1 turbo my old truck has over 500k still puttering along all hard heavy short trips pretty impressive to me

IN THEIR DAY (60s and 70s) were not so shabby. Pulled 8820 1100 miles on harvest run and didn't think it was that bad cuz other guys had 427 gasser.
In today's world wd be underpowered.

The 3116 took the place of the 3208 V8 and was used in the early 90's.

Have one in a bucket truck that weighs around 30,000lb its adequate but no speed demon, would be under powered in a tandem in my opinion. 65mph is tops in the bucket truck with an allison, any more and it starts getting hot. From what I've read they are a parent bore and not rebuild-able.

It's the worst engine cat ever built. That being said, it's just as good as a 7.3 powerstroke so if you like them and would be happy with similar power you would probably like it just fine.

3116's and early 3126's were mechanical injectors and oil changes have nothing to do with them. The later 3126's and early C-7's had the hydraulic (HEUI) injectors that were fired by motor oil. Frequent/regular oil changes were a good thing for the injectors life.

We have one in a Ford L8000 tandem paired up with a 13 speed. She is no speed demon and you need to use every gear you have when she is loaded up. Also, with the exhaust brake being a flapper instead of a true jake, the stopping power isn't quite there either. But it gets from point A to point B and it's paid for.
