Hybrid 85 corn worth a try?

Subject: Hybrid 85 corn worth a try?


See these ads all over for hybrid 85 corn. They offer a couple different day corn. Looks like all conventional corn. Anyone tried it and had success?

S.E. Rapides Parish,LA		I’m wondering the same thing. Had a neighbor
ask me about them. All conventional seed corn.
My concern is lack of any yield data from LSU, Mississippi State, or any other school that does
variety tests.

South Eastern VA		I say if you have the room to plant something like that, absolutely plant it.

Just make sure it’s not next to a busy road. Lol
I’m all about trying things and planting test strips of different brands and varieties.

If you get special deals from suppliers that’s an extra incentive in my opinion…what’s it gonna hurt.

I’m super small time farmer so I don’t get deals and discounts form seed salesmen. Hahahahaha

East Central Ia		The most expensive seed I have ever planted was free…

I think it is awesome to try new things and make sure what you think is best for your operation is actually performing that way.

But things like seed can have HUGE impacts on your production and bottom line. I tread very very carefully trying to take risks and cut costs on seed is not an area I am comfortable experimenting without lots of small scale on farm testing.

The only free seed that gets handed out is from Pioneer (the seed YOU sell).

Northeast Louisiana		I have 12 bags of 114 day under my shed. Had to try it. Planting it on a field with heavy deer pressure. Some
Hogs. Dryland. So I’m not expecting a home run. Interested to see how it does though.

Palestine Illinois		We had some last year. We planted it as double crop corn. It did as a wee as the Stone that was in the same field. Overall we had management issues and the yield was not great, but that is totally on us not the seed. We got caught with no nitrogen and it got wet, so the N was late.

I have spoke with Nick, the owner, many times. I think they are an honest company. It is a sister company to the Cover Crop Exchange.

NC South Dakota		I was pretty happy with the 104 day and 109 day a few years ago I used for silage.
The sub 100 RM needs some work on genetics IMO, well according to my side by sides.
Seed quality was good.

Statesville, NC		Only way to know is put it in a plot beside your other corn. Make sure it's going to be available next year. No good in a plot if they are discontinuing it, and a lot of cheap corn is something being discontinued.

NC IA		Random internet seed is the last thing I'm putting in the ground when I need reliable genetics to cover ridiculous input expenses this year. I just shake my head when other guys tell me they are planting XYZ farmer dealer seed brand because its $20-30 a bag cheaper than the agronomist selling Brevant, Croplan, Dekalb, NK. We're talking about $7 an acre. I'm not saving $7 just to risk planting genetics with no trial data, zero research dollars, and absolutely no real dealer support if the crop fails. Sounds like a great way to go broke.
