Replacing piping on my 80' spray boom and want to add end cap flush valves. Looks like there are at least 3 options with Hypro, Pentair, and Wilger. I'm looking for recommendations for these or others.

My understanding is that some (or all) of these also work as a vent that result in better sprayer performance by eliminating air in boom? Any advice from someone with experience would be appreciated. Thanks

We have the wilger ones and really like them. But they do not have an air vent if thats what you want

NEND

I have the Hypro Express end caps. I like them, they do let air out. They now have the option to be equipped with valves to drain them out. I had to buy those separately because they didn’t have the option when I bought the original end caps. How much are the Wilger ones? They look like a good deal just for flushing. But if the Express endcaps aren’t much more total investment (depending on how many you need), I’d get the Express endcaps. Another advantage of the Express endcaps is the don’t have the dead end space at the end of the boom/past the last nozzle body like any other end cap would have. The one thing about the express endcaps is they are more time consuming to install, and you need a special jig to drill the holes for them (it was a little over $100 when I put mine on.

+1 to bmatteson's post. I started wth the Hypro express caps and added the 1/4 turn valves when Pentair came out with them. There is one spot on each boom of my 4710 where a cross brace is in the way so the valve can't be installed.

Ah, thats the newer flush valve version.

He's talking the valve that incorporates the last nozzle body at the end-most part of the boom, has a full volume air purge through that last body, and has the full ID flush valve directly below. It also has a port above for recirc kits, if needed.

I had a Fast 3 point sprayer and they just used Garden Hose Caps at the ends. I was able to install/remove them by hand. This might not be as convenient but it seemed OK for my purposes.

I suspect the reason that mine came with Garden Hose Caps was cost. As I recall my boom had nine or ten dead ends. The cost of that many quarter turn valves would add up.

I had the Wilger flush valves on my sprayer. Ran I think 3 seasons like that, they will gradually get harder and harder to turn, then last year I started having trouble with a bunch of them leaking pretty bad. Took them apart and the O-rings were all shot. The o -rings can be replaced, but I decided they were more of a pain than I wanted to deal with after a couple seasons again. I ended up switching them out for banjo 1/4 turn mini ball valves. I only used them when cleaning the sprayer out last year, so don't have much experience with them yet. So I far I like them a lot better than the Wilger's though.

As far as bleeding air, I just go back and crack each valve to purge any air after I run the boom dry (which I try not too do too often. Usually only when cleaning out and switching products). An automatic way to purge air would be handy, but not bad to do it the way I currently do.

I use natural gas/propane 1/4 turn valves from Bomgaars then just added a poly 90 degree elbow and point it where you want. Have worked great for 3 years now and no issues with hard to open or leakage. I just crack open for few seconds to purge any air like stated previously. Much cheaper than branded flush valves.

Pentair = Hypro's parent company.
