What is the best closing wheel or combination to run on everything from full tillage to no till in sand to heavy black ground? Currently running 2 rubbers.

Anything should be better than 2 rubber wheels. Every manufacturer says their wheels are best and they work in all soils! We like the Martin spiked wheels in higher moisture no-till soils

Two rubber wedge wheels and drag chains is a pretty good combo for me.

Yeah it's wrong to say which ones are "best". Every piece of dirt is different an planting conditions change every year. I would ask a neighbor what works for them but I wouldn't ask someone across the country.

We like Twisters and Copperheads and don't know that I'd turn around for the difference.  Both seem to do a nice job and will work in corn or beans.  I'd probably lean towards the Copperheads as they are same left or right.

We put a few rows of four different ones on our 36 row planter. Checked stand, root mass, yield. We are back to the original Deere rubber ones that come with the planter....Dennis

Have furrow cruisers on our kinze and are very happy with them. (Both wheels spiked) but they do wear out. Around 200 acres a row now and they will get flipped for this spring and then replaced.

Can't understand how this is acceptable. They are selling a $7 wheel for $70 that lasts a few years and then needs replaced. There are solutions that will give the same results for the same cost that will last 1000 ac per row or more.

I'd say a water jet and some 4x8 pieces of HDPE would pay very well.

I was quoted $7 per wheel for an injection mold of our wheel design, just can't bring myself to sell such a poor quality product that will only last some farmers a few years before its wore out.

+1

I put mohawks on last year and really like them. They are aggressive enough to close heavier soils in no till, and they don't throw a lot of dirt.

I have run Mohawks for about 8 years with about 500 acres each year. They still look good. I tried their cast Mohawk about 3 years ago on two rows to try the bolt on and they still look new. I dribble 15 gal of fertilizer behind them on each side of row and I think the crumbling effect helps fertilizer get into soil.

We don't farm any heavy black ground or sand, it's all in the middle of those somewhere. I ran trials on 5-6 different wheels in no till and conventional tillage 3 years ago and every single aftermarket one I tried was better than the factory rubbers, in both no till and conventional till. Though the difference was much less in conventional tillage. S&I Distributing Finger Tills were the best for us, and Mohawks from Schaffert were almost as good. The Finger Tills are cast and very heavy, I am all no till now and like running them because of the weight. If you do a more even mix of no till and conventional till I would really look into the Mohawks because they are an insert that replaces the rubber on the factory wheel and are much lighter. It is more work to install them on the factory plastic halves than unbolting the old wheels and bolting on something new, but they are also about half the price of the finger tills. Just my $.02

If you run the copperheads or getters In conventional tillage can you get good results only running 1 paired with the original rubber?

I think so the 2 disk with the single press wheel. Its all just a game. every company has the best.... Seed is the best example, always get fliers we beat another company by x bushels. All propaganda to spend money. Don't get me started on all the Snake Oils, voodoo liquids, they claim will save your farm by adding bushels.

Have you had any experience using that system planting green into long term no-till fields with a cover crop?

Think we are definitely in the minority. :-)
Under the conditions I no till in sometimes they are hard to beat. Simple and cheap compared to other closing systems.

I’ve tried 2 Schlagel Posi-Close, 2 cast irons, one cast iron and one 15” spike, 2 13” plastic kinze spikes and 2 dawn curvetines. I conv till, stale bed, and no till. Hands down like the curvetines best.I’ve yet to encounter a condition where they won’t close. Schlagels would be second and worked good until I hit a wet spot. 2 plastic kinze spikes work ok and I have them in my bean rows now. They aren’t the sturdiest though if you have rocks. Would rather have 2 rubber wheels over 2 cast or cast/spike combo.

Have ran schlagels for 10 years. They work good except in wheat stubble have a little trouble closing the slot. Furrow cruisers on the bean planter. Can get more presssure with them, better job at a shallower (soybean) depth. just a little durability issue.

Have run 2 copper heads for quite a while. Bought a new kinze two years ago and I think they make their own now. All one piece. They seem to be lasting very well so far. Don't know what they cost to replace
