Does anybody know how the intercooler system works on this tractor ? Is there a separate fan in the housing pulling air from left side of tractor, or is this all run off of the turbo ? Can’t seem to find any info…. What are common issues that could cause the intercooler to not work ? Thanks !

A separate "tip turbine fan" is used to route cooling air through the heat exchanger. Approximately 10% of the turbo output is used to drive said fan. How do you know it doesn't work?

Hello Bern, thank you for the info. I don’t know that it doesn’t work. I’m doing some minor seasonal repairs and just realized that I’ve never serviced this part of the engine… ever … so I’ve been looking at it trying to first figure out how it worked, then if anything associated with it needs to be addressed or serviced. I mean - in 30 years it hasn’t been touched !

The next time you have it under a hard pull, open up the RH door and feel for hot air coming from the RH grille screen. A blast of hot air means it's doing what it's supposed to. No air movement likely means the turbine and/or aftercooler is plugged with dirt.

Hey Bern….. I have the intercooler unit taken out of the tractor and disassembled. Radiator was definitely dirty, and a lot of dirt came out the left side air intake large assembly. The turbine seems to spin freely. My question is, is there any maintenance to the turbine that I should do while I’m at this point ? Can you re grease it ? Looks like the shaft is permanently set in a cast iron housing. It’s a real pain getting this far in, so I figured I’d ask because I don’t want to get back in this far for long long time ! Thanks !!

If the turbine spins freely I'd leave it alone. I believe it runs on a sealed bearing that is not designed to be serviced.
