I have owned 2 trucks 2001 and 2006 Volvos with the Eaton Fuller Auto-Shift trannys and now have a 2020 Volvo with the Ishift tranny. You couldn’t sell me a truck with regular transmission after these above mentioned trannys, esp the I Shift.
Allison’s are used in Trash trucks , Redi Mix trucks and school busses around here…

Thats funny. I have 2 Freightliner Cascadias, 1 is a 2012 with 10spd Ultrashift, the 2nd is a 2013 with a eaton 10 speed manual. Can hit over 75mph in 9th gear with the manual 10 speed, would much rather drive the manual every day of the week. That being said, it is nice to have the automatic as a 2nd truck that someone less experienced can drive.
Edit: When you're on a busier road and come up on a set of wagons or a train of equipment moving fields, its so much easier to get around them in the manual transmission where you have complete control over what gear and engine speed you are running. The automatic is an easy "lazy" truck to drive and has its place, but if I had only 1 truck it would be a manual. When I first got the automatic our second truck was an older white gmc with some wear on it. Thought I had gone to heaven driving the newer automatic compared to the older truck. Got the 2nd truck with a bigger engine and the manual transmission, and if I have a choice of 1 to drive, its always the manual.

The trucks with the manual auto shift tranny aren’t any good as dragsters, but who is trying to get up to 70 mph very quick with a truck? My truck loaded or empty will skip shift ever once in a while depending on the terrain I’m driving in. My truck works between 1100 and 1500 rpms, 70 mph is only 1390 rpms. It has 1850 torque, 455 hp. I’m happy with it and that is all that matters to me.

That it, with the manual transmission, loaded I only need 5 gears by skip shifting, unloaded and I only need 4. Its just so much nicer being in complete control of the truck.

Only need 5 loaded? Wow
I could maybe get away with 7 of 10. Not 5
Even unloaded I would want 6
DD15. But I also run 80MPH loaded 84-88K too
I can skip shift one gear at a time with the ultrashift but I only do that unloaded. Loaded there’s no need

Loaded I'll go 4-6-8-9-10 Unloaded a lot of times I'll leave it in high range and slowly roll through the stop if I can and go 6-8-9-10. Also have the DD15 in front of the manual that's tuned and has really good torque.

I suppose even at wide open stops without traffic and a clear view, you still make sure to come to a complete stop, count to 10, and then proceed on through? This is a farm truck we are talking about with most of the driving in rural areas...

Yes I stop, and they are farm trucks, and it's wide open country....It will be your fault if you live.

I can lock my Ishift in to M manual shift if I elect to, but usually let the computer do its job. All I have to do it hit the up shift or down shift button on the gear shift. I’m not a cowboy trucker at my age 80, the computer gets better fuel mileage than I do though.

Allisons are Great trans to have in a truck i have been around them in Milk truck applications and they take a beating and hold up well. Allison trans rep once told me he sold 2 to a company and within a year the whole truck fleet was changed to ally autos and they save $$ on fuel and repairs and Driver retention was much better

We have half dozen ten speeds and half dozen Allison's on the farm. The Allison's are always grabbed first. They work great in the field for short trips to the elevator. Load em to 90,000 with no issues. We have had less repairs on the Allison's than the 10 speeds (clutches). If they they are geared right with good hp they are tough to beat IMO.

I have a 2002 semi with a 10 speed 3 pedal auto shift. Also have a 2 year old dump truck with the Allison. Load both heavy and no problems in the field. Prefer the Allison since it gets up to speed way faster but the auto shift gets better mileage. Plus the auto shift keeps throwing check engine codes.

We have 3 tractors on the farm and haul 88000 to 92000 gross pounds. One has a 13 speed manual, the second truck has 10 speed Eaton auto shift and third truck has a 6 Allison. The Allison is my favorite truck to drive. Wilson

Short trips out of the field-1-10 miles or further with lots of stops and starts, going to be hard to beat a Allison automatic. It autoshifts on the way down very well also.
If you regularly haul longer trips during harvest or after harvest, might be more efficient with decent drivers to have autoshift or manual shift.

Was in the same place as you last year and went ahead and bought a 07 Kenworth T800 with an Allison transmission and C-13 Cat at 475hp. Truck was used for 50 mile one way trips to the elevator, loaded with a live bottom trailer at 90k plus. Soft beet fields with short 5 mile trips loaded the same. Cant say it ever disappointed. Every new truck on this farm from now on will have an Allison tranny in it. In my experience old school truckers dislike Allison's because it takes away the coolness factor but spend a day in one and they get over that pretty quick.

I learned recently that the DT12 like some freightliners have are usually not pto compatible. A fee are but most not. Have multiple 10spd ultra shifts with pto

Only Allison autos I have been around were in fire trucks. In that application they work well. They pull hard and fast, they help with breaking, they make it easier for the operator to keep their mind on driving not shifting, some were pto equipped for pump and roll, and best of all we never had any trouble.

We have 2 Allison 6 speeds behind DD16 560hp. They are awesome. Nobody on our farm wants to drive the 18 speeds. The way the torque converter pulls out of soft field’s is the best no question. Way easier on the drive train. Only use enough power just to get it rolling instead of twisting the heck out of the frame to get it moving. We are pulling B trains which gross over 137000 lbs. Only issue is finding them. They are rare.

Have ran both auto shift and Allison automatic. My preference is the Allison. Smoother shifting and backing up to things is much easier. The auto shift wants to push the clutch in when you let off the gas and stop moving. Had the Allison in a semi that my uncle now has. When I would drive it I almost forgot I was in a semi and driving a pickup.
