Subject: Service truck air compressor?

southern mn.
Just purchased a service truck and been thinking about putting an air compressor on it. Gas powered compressors are a little spendy for now. Have a welder/generator, could I get by with a smaller electric compressor with a 15 gallon tank 5CFM ?
Just running a 3/4 air impact, die grinder and filling tires. Wouldnt be using air tools very much I think? Opinions or ideas?

Put one together last year, went to harbor freight and got a compressor. Was told that if not using welder/generator all the time it's not the best conditions for them to be in. Went looking and hf was half price of northern tool. Have a few hours on it seems good so far.

From my experience, with a compressor that size, there is no use in carrying a 3/4 impact. On a smaller compressor, a 1/2” will have just as much torque as a 3/4 because you can’t feed the 3/4 enough air. Getting a decent sized gas compressor now will be cheaper than an electric one now and a gas powered one later. Or get the electric one and a 3/4 Milwaukee impact. But I like having a 3/4 air impact and a cordless version for different tasks.

SE Nebraska, Near Misery and Cans Ass!
Seems like we've always got a truck around with air on it for airing up tires and stuff. I've chosen to invest in better 3/4 drive cordless impacts instead of air compressors on surface vehicles.

I have a Northern Tools compressor on my truck and use it a lot it seems. Whether it's airing tires, blowing the dirt and oil off of something to be worked on, or using air tools. The Honda engine starts easily and pumps up to about 175 psi. However...it seems like it creates a lot more water in running than my shop air compressor probably because of the environment it's in. Drain the water in the tank after EVERY use!

Correct, it's a nine foot Reading.
Got it from Pafco in East Peoria. It seems to seal up pretty tight, no dust to speak of in the compartments.
I mounted the air compressor and welder on a short riser with 1 sq tubing underneath and some 11 gauge sheet on top. The riser then bolts to the bed floor in 4 corners.

Check with Northcentral Air in Downs KS. I've got 2 of their compressors one gas for the service truck and one big one for the shop. Have had both for a long time and no trouble with either. Their prices have been pretty good compared to others.

I’ve got one the same as mentioned above from Northern Tool and we love it. Putting together a new service truck now and it’ll definitely make the move. I’ve tried using a small 15 gal compressor to air up truck tires at a shed and we about smoked it on the first set.

5 CFM compressor would be about hopeless on a 3/4 impact or any larger die grinder. I have an 8 or 9 gallon 14~ CFM wheel barrow compressor, and it can get a workout when using an impact, die grinder, or air hammer. It works well enough, but I can start to loose pressure easily enough. I think you can get a wheelbarrow compressor for under 1000 if that helps.

To be honest 2 of the things you mentioned are air hogs. You would barely run one with that compressor.

On the truck we have a 22cfm I think at 125 psi rated.

I wouldn’t want any smaller. It is nice when you want to blow an area off on the combine before working on it, or blowing out filters.

I will admit we have used the semi trucks to air up tires and occasionally will run an impact with them but alot of time they aren’t in the field or maybe they could be hauling something else while the machine is down.

In my opinion a good service truck has a good compressor.

If you want to go gas, these are the two best options I have found. I prefer the Jenny (formerly Emglo) pump. But Rolair stands behind their products.

Both are U.S. products- except for the Honda engine.

Don't mess around with the smaller compressor. Get the biggest one Harbor Freight has or probably the northern tool one is comparable.
One service call on the side of the road will pay for one.
I have had my Harbor Freight one for12 years now. I have used it o blow off the combine, o fix tires and repairs out on the road and in the field.
I bought a 3/4 100 ft hose with it and have even plumbed it into the air system on semis, wrapped the hose around the tow strap and pulled the truck home with the pickup.
If you do that one has to be careful the hose does not drag much but it works.
