Subject: gopher control

Darn things are getting to be a problem in hay fields. Tried gassing them truck exhaust. sorta helped, but very time consuming. Looked into the deal of blowing them up with propane. Equipment for the set up on the one type I looked at was 2K, and sure looked like that would be time consuming also. What kind of results can one expect from using the gopher tunnel plows? any other suggestions.

Doug, you don't say where you are, so please understand that most everything I'll relate here I learned in hay fields in central Nevada.

We used three methods to control pocket gophers:

1. Cinch traps.

https://www.cinchtraps.com/product/cinch-traps-gopher-trap/

Darn, these things have gotten wicked expensive. In the 2000's, I'd buy them for $8/per. OK, if you use these, you want to drill a hole through the plate, so you can stake them down to the ground to keep them from walking off when cats, dogs or coyotes dig up your trap to get at the gopher. There are several other mods we'd do to them to make them as effective as possible, but I will tell you right now, these are the most effective gopher trap there is. I've used the rest, and they were mostly a waste of time. The Cinch traps work, and work well. Just stake them down. At $20+ per trap, I'd be pretty pissed off if even one of them walked away on me.

2. For heavy infestations (like you can walked across the field, hopping from one gopher mound to the next one), then the gopher getter with strychnine bait on groated oats with brown sugar mixed in works pretty well. I'd say that in one highly infested field we tunneled with the gopher getter, we got about an 80%+ kill on the first application, then we went after the stragglers with the Cinch traps.

3. Then we get to the fumigant tablets. We used Phostoxin tablets, which produce phosgene gas when they hit soil moisture. To use these, you dig out the gopher mount to get to the tunnel, toss a couple/three tablets down into the burrow, then stuff in some newspaper and cover the hole. Do not touch the tablets with your bare hands. These work much better than the propane blaster, or CO poisoning, etc. These also worked well for us in Belding ground squirrel elimination. These require a restricted applicator license, and in Nevada, we had to have a rodent certificate on top of the restricted license to use these. But they worked very, very well.

central - east central Minnesota -

Here is a different variation of the cinch trap I've used for 50 plus years with very good results - Much less expensive too . .  . .

It works on pocket gophers (the gophers that build the mounds and live in tunnels) and works on stripped gophers (the ones that live in abandoned pocket gopher mounds, or otherwise as know as "Goldy Gopher", Mn mascot).  Here, the pocket gophers will be most active in the mornings (dawn till 9 am ish to 3 or 4 pm till dusk). Dig open tunnel at mound, place trap down hole, gopher trys to fill opening and trap gets it around the neck or back side  (depends if it's investigating the light or pushing dirt back with it rear feet/legs).

We used to use a gopher tunnel plow, but bigger digging animals, badger, fox, coyote, would follow the trenches dig out the dead gophers and leave big holes all over, especially in sandy ground.
I've been trapping 50+ years. The best pocket gopher traps I've ever used (and all I use now)as far as catch rate are Lanesboro GT 100s,not uncommon to have a catch rate of 70-80% (checking once a day)in the spring/fall when there very active. Checking twice a day and moving trapped out holes, the best day this spring useing 12 traps 19 pocket gophers.

If you go the trap route, these cinch traps work the best.
A good Jack Russel can find the tunnels faster than you can set the traps. This guy could find them at 12 weeks old.
Also, if you go early morning just as it gets light out, a lot of tunnels will still be open.

I'm in NW wi close to the minnesota line and we are dealing with pocket gophers. Thanks everybody for the information. Really makes a guy mad when you cut the hay leaving the discbine down to level the mound, and you come back to rake and the buggers have thrown up new big mounds on top of the cut hay. Didn't realize that critters other than pocket gophers can cause problems in fields.

Better say what you actually have. Gophers aren't the same as pocket gophers and aren't the same as voles and aren't the same and moles. Pocket gophers make mounds here. Sometimes just barely a mound of dirt to making it a 9" tall. You can't drown them. Traps work and are very very time consuming and the loss to fox or coyote get expensive. The little ripper/plow thing sorta works and it sorta don't. It doesn't matter if it's wet or suuuuper dry, they are here always. Our striped gophers you can drown out. Easy peasy. They will destroy a fresh emerged corn field in a very short time.

I don’t know much about gophers, but on groundhogs I’ve had luck with smoke bombs. Just light it, throw it down the hole, and then take a shovel and fill the hole in. If smoke starts coming out of any other holes, fill them in too. I will say it only works if there’s enough moisture for the ground to seal up though. If the ground is dried up and cracked the smoke just leaks out everywhere and doesn’t do any good.

When I was a kid I would go around with grandpa with a liquid manure tank and fill groundhog holes up with hog manure. Then we would stand around the holes and shoot anything that came running out. Just be sure the hole you’re filling isn’t a tile suck hole or you might get in a little trouble

Doug in WI, you're best off to trap or find a dead one and post a picture, it could be different critters that would be handled differently.

I had issues on field. I hit those areas with NH3. Easy 80% then poison. Had start of take over this spring. Hit it with poison. 3x. (In different areas as mounds started) really was happy with results.
You could check area bounty on gophers. I would think if you have a oxy/acetylene tourch. I would think you could build a gopher unit easy. Just need to protect hoses, have solid ignition unit.

Montana
Around here everyone uses gopher poison ( Strychnine oats). purchase from chemical dealer. Then make a bait station out of pvc, 2" tee with 2 foot of pipe on the ends, cap the top, zip tie or wire it to a fence post. Search up on Amazon.
