Subject: 9300 John Deere fuel bleed back issue.

So we have been having a lot of difficulty starting our 9300 John Deere wheel tractor. I have the dual rail fuel system with transfer pump on back of head. I have clamped inlet and outlet hoses to make sure fuel stays at engine… it still feels as if fuel is making its way back to the tank. I have checked all 3 check valves. All seem to be working correctly. My high side fuel pressure is about 30psi cranking, 75psi idling, 95psi full throttle. Are these pressures low? Anybody can replace parts, I want it fixed! Even starting hot it’s sometimes takes many revolutions to start. The pump is black in color so I think it’s been replaced. Tractor has 7500 hours on it. No fuel in oil. Deer parts are sure getting expensive, $450 for one check valve! I think I should quit farming and start a parts wearhouse!

On a side note our cam and crankshaft sensors are about a year old and already have oil in the connector again!!!!!!

WCIL
We've had a 9200 and 9430 doing that and both needed injectors. Different engines but similar issues.

Embarrass WI
I had a 9300 that was giving us fits until we replaced the transfer pump on the back of the head. Mine was black and had already been replaced at least once before. IIRC, tractor had about 6500 hours then.

Edit, had replaced injectors and cups with no improvement previously.

I fought everything once too. At the same time I had fuel pouring about between an injector cup and injector. I had 8300 ish hrs so decided to do injectors. But my starting was getting worse all the time. IMO opinion your pressures are good. Mine ended up being the gear pump after all that. The tech who found it showed me if you can spin that pump very easily it is worn out. The new one took some effort to turn.

Check and see if you might be getting fuel into your antifreeze, that was my problem and it was injector cups, i replaced them and havent had a problem since, although out of habit i always leave tank full if i know its gonna be sitting for a while, which always did help.

I installed a new transfer pump on back of head. It appears nothing has changed. No fuel in antifreeze. Once started engine runs great. We previously had a JD 9400 with the same fuel system and it ran great the years we had it, we did nothing but regular macitence on it. I will say if I haven’t already, (9400)it started with a flick of the starter. Very reliable! Even hot out 9300 takes a few revolutions to start like it’s starving for fuel. I know any electronic fired motor normally takes two revolutions to start, this is longer. I did remove the fuel pressure regulator from the block on back of head and did see some wear. I’m not sure I saw $800 worth of wear though. The line that comes from the regulator dumps back into the pump inlet causing the pump to possibly recirculate fuel. I really wonder what the correct fuel pressure are supposed to be? At the test port?? It’s been a few moons ago when I tested our 9400s fuel pressure but I remember it maxing my 100psi gauge out rather quickly after starting it…
