I’m not sure on model numbers, but does anyone have experience with the newer Massey/ Heston round balers? How do you like them? How well are they built and perform compared to others? Thanks!

We have two RB46 Challenger balers, which are the same as a Hesston 846, I believe. Good solid machines, that can handle twenty eight feet of dry hay at a rapid pace. The pick-up is fast and aggressive. We try to make mostly dry hay to store inside, but have baled wet hay and wrapped when weather dictates. The new Massey baler has a lot of the same parts and have as good of reputation as other more popular brands, model number may be 2946. Massey (Agco) has a new model that is of European design, don't remember the model numbers. One or two in this local area and are in a league of their own. Fast and reliable hay eating machines.

So far after a couple thousand bales through the 2946A baler I have no complaints. Simple, well built and does a nice job. Lots of local support just haven't needed them yet. Would gladly buy another.

Gauge wheels for pickup could be heavier, but they are not meant to carry head all day, more of an anti scalp wheel.

We run a discontinued Vermeer 504pro which was a European design that is now a Massey baler after Agco bought Lely. You should check it out. It is a very good design. Great in wet or dry hay, and stalks. It has chopper knives, and I won't own one without them now. We only run Vermeer hay tools, but I would have to buy the red Lely/Massey if I needed a new one.

The Vermeer-Lely-Agco deal is quite a mess as Vermeer has some rights to some of Lely's stuff and AGCO has the rest, and some appear to be both?

Either way I'm sure Vermeer was very happy about that lol.

The new Massey balers are the RB4180V and RB4160V, we demoed one for about 40 bales, it’s got a ton of capacity far as pickup, just didn’t have it quite dialed in yet far as packing and filling the bales. It was very nice to feed those bales into the mixer, we only had 8 knives in I believe, it worked really well.

I have a 6364 New Idea, same as a Hesston 846A, like it real well, only comparison I have though is I had a Hesston 550 and a neighbor's 4x5 Deere, not sure of the model. I use twine and can fairly easily when everything is clicking bale 30 bales an hour with a White 6710 in front of it, rated at 95 PTO hp., (Also have baled with the American 80 handles it almost as well as the 6710 in a pinch, little slower ground speed though), a few more ponies in the hills would not hurt though. Only downside to this one is that if the electrical system takes a break you don't bale hay....has not happened yet, but it is always a concern.
