Subject: John Deere 8450

Just purchased a JD 8450 to pull a vertical tillage tool. This will be my first articulating tractor. This is cheap HP and is in great condition. What are some things that I should watch out for and expect from this tractor? Any special maintenance? Thanks!

Don't overwork it.

DO NOT let the front axle pivot enough to slam the stops.

Keep everything greased well.

The 86s were the bigger problem child with the 619. The 84 has a 466. You can still have problems if you abuse it, but not nearly as likely as an 86. I had an 8440 for 14 years with no major issues.

I've got a friend in MT that is the type that could break an anvil with a rubber hammer. Very hard on stuff. Their 8650 has been there since new. It's on it's 2nd Degelman blade, that's how hard it has been used. It just keeps on going. Not sure why.

I think those are exempt from the regular problems of the larger models. I let one hit the axle stops, probably a hundred times a day, for about 2000 hours, it’s a brush tractor. I think it’s not enough power to hurt the tractor, and the engine is set conservatively, and has a big cooling system. One time I pulled a field cultivator with it, seemed like a happy tractor, doing farm work, instead of it’s normal job of slow and rough pulling a root rake.

Most VT tools are designed to be pulled at higher field speeds. My experience with Excelerator and that tractor, I would want no more than a 20 foot machine behind it. It will be loaded.

That was what I was thinking..............All that weight even with a 619 in the bigger ones they were on the slug side, would think the 466 versions would be worse, with a tool that needs speed I would guess with the transmission in them would make things a challenge, but I am not going to be running it.

You don’t list a location so I usually don’t reply buttttt. Make sure you use non clay grease on the center drive shafts and do it often. That little detail cost me enough 35 years ago I can still remember what happens when shafts do not slide like they should. Now I shared a little information that can save you $$$$ You can at least put down what state you’re from.... Dennis

Not alot of torq with the tractor which is like the 8440 & 8430. However a 8560 will have more torq as well as the 8760.
