Currently running 4” twist and trying for 12” deep to bust up compaction. Considering switching to straight points to make it pull just a hair easier, and straighter, but don’t want to give up the fracturing action. Anyone know of a 3-4” straight point that’s fairly long?

all the 3 and 4" points I'm aware of arent tough enough for what your after, they'll be breaking off all day long. We arent running as deep as you are, but we bust up compaction with a straight 2" reversible spike. They're 1" thick, and I've fractured a lot of plow pan and combine ruts with them.

You would be better off going to a ripper at those depths. Neighbor had a set to go that deep with a sunflower chisel, think they had different shank assemblies to switch out, don't think they used it much. But that was years ago before inline rippers became common. Parabolic shanks on a ripper is what you are after.

Check these out, becoming very popular. High alloy excessive wear. They also make field cult. and s-tine sweeps.

I have a set of theses on a Dominator and guessing they will have at least twice the life of Deere points, they do cost more but not double so they are worth it.

I have a 2500 inline ripper, but in my soils the shanks are too far apart, and it doesn’t want to fracture the whole soil profile. Leads to a very unevenly settled field and not as mellow as the chisel. I have used a chisel with 2” spikes before and had really good success, and I may go back to those, but looking to do as much fracturing as I can pull.

We run the reversible John Blue points from our Local Runnings store ( like a tractor supply) . Then I put carbide on them and they last a long time all while staying close to the same depth as new .

What is the cost for the Carbide. Ive been buying the carbide spiked ones and in my soils get about 800 acres out of them before the points start to fail. But I also have to hardface the shanks or theyll wear out before the points.

No chisel plow frame is going to hold up long term to running 12" deep. Especially with 4" points. Like the other guy said, you need a ripper. We only run 2" points and I will never go back to a reversible point. These cost almost double what a reversible one will, but you'll get over 3x the wear and not have to replace bolts when you reverse them.

How many of you guys get frustrated when you lose the point from the plow bolt wearing thin. Happens twice as fast when you flip the point over.
That's another reason I like the Richmond points. They use a actual bolt fully inserted in the point. No longer an issue.

It happens. I’ve started laying a bead across bolt heads now too to help stop that. This is feild cult sweep

My dealer ordered me a set of these today, exactly what I was looking for and $29 each. Thank you for the recommendation, can’t wait to try them out!

These are the best I have used. Local Deere dealer stocks them. Few inches longer than some other brands and they use regular hex head bolts.
