Subject: Open front shed orientation and size

I need another roof for equipment storage. I'm thinking something that is easy in/out like several open bays/stalls, so that would mean open on a side with the eave, or big monoslope. It'd just make it more useable for me at this point to have a bay I can pull/park something in and have easy access to get any number of things in/out. It'd also be nice to build myself to save some money, so don't want huge. I was thinking bays maybe 16' wide, so that'd be a length of 80' or so. Thinking 40-50' deep/wide. I also can orientate it so open side is north or south. Which way would be better for snow buildup? Not sure if blowing straight in is worse or blowing around building and swirling in the south side is worse. North face would be better for sun most of the year. What size would you suggest? What kind of building do you like for this, I don't like wood in the ground (all steel, wood on concrete). Will probably be just gravel floor.

I have another open gable on a 60x80 steel building that faces NE. We built it and it is all steel.

Any other thoughts appreciated.

Here, open to the south or east is mostly preferred. We have a 60 x 120 open to the east. The posts in the front are 30’ apart, which seems to be a really good opening size for us. I like 60’ deep because we can park certain things in the back , and still have room for some tractor/implement combos to pull under roof in front.

Dave, a shed like yours would be awesome. I've always thought that yours is a nice one. I like the longer overhang.

Our prevailing winds are from the southwest or northwest so mine is open on the east side.

Dad built one open to the east in 1994. That will be the last open front building ever on this farm. Open front buildings= giant bird houses About once a week I have to go around and dig bird nests out of equipment not to mention all the bird crap all over them and we've tried everything to get/keep the birds out.

Notice Dave9110's shed has a steel ceiling.

I can see the practical benefit of getting at equipment through the open side, but between swirling snow, (in NWIA the wind blows from all 4 directions at once) I would not build a 3 sided shed. My open front cattle and hay sheds can have drifts reach to the back.

That only reduces bird activity. They still nest in/on the machinery and find plenty of things to crap all over.

We store equipment in our old hog hoop buildings. Birds can’t build on the cover structure, but I still dream of a nice enclosed shed someday because of all the bird crap on the combines and seeding equipment.

We have a 40x112x16' open on the south end, other than making it bigger only thing I would change and plan to do this winter is put steel up on the inside of the last bay, the untreated wall girls are showing some weathering.

We have a few open front sheds, we really like them for ease of use. 2 are east facing, 40' deep with 5' overhang (next I'd go 45' deep with 5' overhang) bay's range from 14'-22' really depends what you want to put in, if smaller tractors we prefer 22' wide and get 2 tractors in vs one tractor per 14' bay. Another is west facing same dimensions and was built with 14' sidewall, what they did wrong though is they just added to the the roof for the overhang so it dropped the eve on the open side 20" which kinda sucks.

Add an opening on the end walls at the back. You can then drive all the way through with grain trucks during harvest. Without backing up.

Mine is open towards the east. Rain doesn’t blow in unless it comes from the east which is rare. Have another shed open on the south end and rain blows half way through it. Another big advantage is the trucks and tractors get the morning sun to warm them up in the winter. Disadvantage is blindness backing a semi in when the sun is just right in the afternoons.

Our machine shed is three sided 130x50 with 100x50 open to the East. Main thing I would change would be to build it bigger (both wider and longer). Two center bays are 30 wide and each end bay is 2 wide. Works pretty well for most of our equipment. The 30s are pretty nice can get two dualed tractors side by side easily. We put some light in and plenty of power outlets, inside and out, so anything can be plugged in no matter where it’s parked. Here’s the only pic I could find right now…

I have a 56 X 80, open on the 80' side. It's a wood truss building, and the trusses are 80'. I didn't want any posts to work around. Also, the water goes off the sides instead of the open end. I had the ends wrapped around 4' for strength, so the opening is actually 72'. The area behind the 4' is good for storing small items on pallets. I had an invasion of birds, and tried several things to deter them to no avail. Finally stapled 1" mesh chicken wire to the bottom of the trusses, completely covering the bottom of the trusses of the whole building. It stopped the birds.
