Texas/New Mexico Stateline
I am kinda new to the cattle industry, and I enjoy reading auction reports from time to time. I see these descriptions fleshy, full, fancy and also Class 1 and 1-2 and 2. Are there any standards behind these descriptions or is it just the 'feelings' or judgment of the auction reporter?

They are loosely used terms, but generally fancy would mean cattle that are showy with lots of eye appeal and the right kind to perform.Fleshy of course would be cattle that have been pushed a bit hard and show too much condition.Full meaning cattle that had insufficient stand before selling.Often hear the term "green" meaning cattle carrying little flesh. These cattle gain well as long as they aren't compromised too much ,then they become hard to start on feed. Just my thoughts

Fancy in the local barn is 99 percent of what walks in. The other 1% limp, gimp or have a pimple or two and are still "so and so's good hiefer/steer/calf"

with decent thickness and muscle. Pretty fancy look to em.
1-2, some 2's on em that with feed and time fancy up and the whole deal is then 1's.
#2. medium frame cattle, some less muscle tone than the 1's, a bunch of that though is that most people cannot distinguish the diff of "thin" vs natural muscle structure. Generally a touch plainer than the 1's, perhaps actually better weighing conditions than the 1's.

"Fancy" is a term EVERYONE uses when trying to sell bred cattle. I have seen so many bred to a "Fancy Angus Bull". When people say the cattle are fancy it's worth about as much as the the paper it's written on

it's also best if they been living off "rocks and scenery."
Give the afore some decent groceries and they simply turn great. It's that simple.
Today's cattle genetics are plenty good....The heavy Angus influence the past 10 years has really improved the maternal end of the business.
I never have figured out why some who think they are livestock folks want their wives on the skinnier trimer side..but seem to want to buy fleshy cattle for grass or feeding ( the reason to use FEED is to put muscle and flesh on em...since feed IS the money making conversion, it's stupid to buy extra weight when all you gotta do is put em in front of it and the cattle will put that wieght on ).
MOST beef cattle are in fact Fancy or future Fancy.....just takes some groceries for em to bloom and show it.
