Looking for a dozer, just want to know what everyone's thoughts are a a Deere 850J Vs a Cat D6 or D7? Price? Hours before you need to be in repair/replacement mode? Parts cost on Deere vs Cat? Just want to know the good and the bad. thanks.

Colorado
Have you run either of them?
Personally I like the hydrostat drive of the Deere, much smoother, easier to control, full power turns and easier to put a novice on.
Hours completely depends on how the machine was used and maintained.

I lve got both. Prefer diff steer in a cat by far. Nothing wrong with the deere but cats are a level above.

Had a D6R, lgp, diff steer, it had a love affair with the tech from Cat. It always seemed to have a problem with some sort of sensor, wiring harness or other gremlin. Lots of power, cool A/C, nice to operate, just drive you broke with the little things. Not to mention the final that blew apart (literally exploded the housing), that was $12k.

Used an 850J for a week or so. It was nice, I think it turned better than the diff steer. Never did much hard pushing with it so hard to compare it’s ‘power’ to Cat.

I run dozers quite a bit for my day job and 95% of the time it's late model cats. I really like them for most of the work I do but there's definitely things I like about the Deere's. A hydro Deere will out push a cat all day every day and also has lots more steering power. The cats on the other hand are way better balanced which is a big plus for finishing work and have quieter and more comfortable cabs. I also prefer the high drive on the cat.

The biggest negative on the Deere is once you cross 4000 hrs get ready for Hydralic leaks. We jack the cab at least twice a year for a blown hose. Which you don’t usually realize till it’s drained the entire resicore. Way too many pooorly routed hyd lines. Deere knows this and they say they have fixed it in the Ls
Other than that it’s a great dozer it will push a lot

I guess you know the 850J is quite a bit smaller than a D7. Comparable to D6R or T.

I’ll take the 850J over the D6, but D7 is bigger, and bigger is better.

850J operates like a little dozer. Smooth forward/back shifting and good visibility. If not too many accessories you can haul it on 18 wheels with the right truck. D7 will take more of a real haul truck, not what most of us haul grain with.

Like 8 said make sure you are comparing apple's to apples. Deere 850j or k would be the same size as a D6r or t. Deere 750j or k would be a D6m or n. Deere 700j or k would be the same as a D6k. I have yet to figure out why cat has 3 different sizes of the D6. Confused yet ?

I'd take the Deere over the CAT. At work we used to have an 850B and a D7H. I'm seen them push blade to blade and the 850 would push the D7 around. The Deere is more graceful and will work on steeper slopes. When they need repair depends on how they've been used and cared for. Parts for both are expensive.
