Subject: IH D-436 engine I Need more Power!

North Carolina
I’ve got an IH 1440 that has 4800 hrs with a D-436 in it and last year was my first year running it. All season it seemed like it just didn’t have any lugging power and it won’t smoke hardly any even if you let it pull the motor down to 23-2400 rpm. It will constantly pull down below 2500 and the low rpm buzzer will start beeping, all fuel filter have been changed so I don’t think they’re the problem. It’s current high idle is around 2740 rpm with wide open throttle and separator engaged. I think that needs to be bumped up to around 2800-2820 to help me stay above the 2500 buzzer.

I know there’s some knowledgeable mechanics here so tell me how to get a little more power without blowing her up. Thanks in advance

If everything is stock that engine is not turbocharged.

You can turn the fuel up and might gain a little power (very little).....but really just more smoke and a bigger fuel bill.

Without more air, there is not much you can do to get more horsepower.

That said, you can adjust the rpm if it's not running at rated speed, and that might help.

Alhambra Il.

Friend has a 1440 and he put a turbo on it and helped it a lot. He found a old 1460 and bought the intake and exhaust from that. He runs a 6 row head and a 20' grain table on it. Don.t turn up RPM very much the machine is set to run at a certain RPM to run all the shaker shoe if you turn it up it will shake it apart. I learned that on a 1680.

Center of the Universe, Huron County, Ontario. Can
Leave the engine alone.
Buy a Stewart Steel - Kyle or AFX impeller for it.
You’ll think you have a size bigger combine.
Also
Put a Turbo II pre cleaner on air filter inlet.
Clean air = hp.

Best bang for $.
I’ve both on my 1460
I’m a believer.

We had a 1480 that had the fuel turned up. On warm days it would run hot. Ended up with a 2388. Don't miss the 1480.

Should be easy to turn up a little to see if it helps.
Take the rectangular cap off fuel pump and should be a screw with jam nut on it
If I remember you turn the screw out one turn and should be a ten percent more hp.

But others have some good ideas

Make sure your not over thrashing and combine is set righr

You need a turbo or a 1460. Neighbor of mine would help cut beans with his 1440 for a few years, we were running the same size heads and I’d run just a touch faster ground speed than he could, despite me running a 1420 beside him. Probably 300 bushels a day difference if that, I didn’t realize until we started talking about it that the 40’s didn’t have turbos. (20’s didn’t either, but mine apparently was ordered with one for rice country judging from the rice tires, mudhog and turbo.)

I’m going to be the odd man out and say you might need to have your injection pump rebuilt. My old 1440 started doing the same thing and rebuilt pump fixed it. I did have another air filter assembly plumbed in.

How long ago was the fuel filter on the lower left side was replaced? It doesn’t take much for that filter to restrict fuel flow to make it run doggy.

Also make sure the electric fuel pump is pumping,. Our 1440 will lay a light haze of smoke out the exhaust at full load. Sounds like you aren't getting enough fuel to it.

i'd also check an make sure the fuel shut off on the bottom of the fuel tank is completely open.
