Subject: End dump or belly dump for farm work. What’s more useful

Hey guys. We are in a quandary right at the moment. We lost a lot of our feed and silage corn to hail so we got a contract to buy wet beet pulp. We are trying to figure out how to haul it home. (70 miles). Our pull type silage wagons won’t go that far. I used to drive truck for a living and have pulled both end and belly dumps extensively. Looking at a tall side belly dump with big doors and 30 foot end dumps. In the end they will hold about the same.

We mainly will use it for silage and wet beet pulp. We have quite a few guys around hauling those commodities in belly dumps and chain floors. As well as small grains, wet distillers and all your dirt, manure, aggregate stuff. Not many end dumps here because it’s commonly windy. Basically we can do and haul all our needs with both types of trailers. But the kicker is, I don’t have a wet kit on any of our farms trucks. There expensive to put on. And we don’t need one for the belly dumps. What would you go with?? And what are your concerns with either one.

I do help some family from time to time that runs a cement company, they occasionally need to help so I can put the trailer to work

I've seen a lot more end dumps laid over playing dead, than ever a belly dump.

I forgot to mention. We’ve gone and looked at several end dump some belly dumps. The belly dumps are quite a bit more expensive, because there are more useful here. But almost every end dump we’ve gone and looked at has been cheap because it’s been laid over more than once

Good question! Only thing I probably wouldn’t like about a belly dump is how far you have to move to get it empty. I don’t have much for cement around the feed area though. Maybe you do? End dump trailers can be very cost effective if you use good judgment when raising them up. We’ve had one for years and have yet to roll it. It is a full frame unit, which I think is a bit more stable when raising than a frameless type. Wet kits aren’t too awful spendy if you find a good used one. I guess I’d lean towards the end dump if it were me. Ultimate would be a belt trailer, or even a side dump. Good luck with your decision!

Wouldn't need one for a belly dump but my vote is side dump. We have a belly and a side, side dump gets used way more than the belly dump. Plus if you have a side dump it's hard for people to.borrow it because they need a wet kit ;-)

At least for all the good options.

If a wet kit looks too expensive, fill a belly dump with haylage one time. Then the wet kit will look like a very minor obstacle.

Yeah it comes out like wet sand. Quite a few guys around use them!! Folks are to poor here to have those chain floor trailers so we use what we can. Dryland farming with 6-10 inches of rain.

We had a guy that had a wet kit malfunction on the truck. Made some hoses to run to a tractor. I don't know how fast it ran the hydraulics but it worked.

I was thinking the same. Get some hoses to run to the skid steer or a tractor. Since you're going to the same destination every time. Add the wet kit later.

Maybe rent the trailer you need and buy one when it's more affordable?

Here there are zero belly dumps, end dumps with a liner common.Need a good pad.Belted floor like trinity is way nicer and safer unless hauling gravel/poop etc as its not so good unless mostly dry bulk.

They take quite a bit of oil volume to dump...especially end dumps. More than you want to empty out of a running tractor.

Side dumps are really the "swiss army knife" of farm trailers. They're heavy, and need a wet kit but their ability to haul and unload just about anything from boulders to trees to nearly liquid trumps everything else. The others all have their place and are the most efficient option for some dedicated material needs but all have some kind of serious compromise for the other uses. Pretty simple, not a lot of moving parts. Scrape it out with an excavator if you need to, hard to hurt them.

Get a three axle side dump, build a high silage side for it and haul anything you want!

I would not want all that truck/trailer oil dumped back in my tractor. Never been around a side dump, actually never seen one in person but am I correct that they can not haul grain or is there a way they can handle dumping in a pit?

Side dump no question about it. High cube attachment can haul big load. No troubles with the wind ( I hauled thousands of loads of manure, feed , gravel , dirt and other things with mine). They are kind of rare but a double tub sidedump trailer is the cats meow. Only time I have heard of them being flipped over is if material sticks or freezes in the corners. I kept the corners cleaned out and never had a problem with mine. Dumped in 70 mph winds with no problem just dump into the wind as in face east or west and dump tub off north side of trailer into north wind. It blows here all the time 30 + common 50+ not uncommon.

Many other haulers tried enddumps hauling the manure from the feedlot here. Sooner or later the trailers and or trucks got rolled over. Many days they could not haul while I kept on trucking.

We have about 40 belly dumps, 20 side dumps, and 40 end dumps at work.

The belly dumps are high maintenance. Half are older 4 door models, half are newer 2 door. The air valves stick and cause problems, but the worst part is the door cylinders. They frequently need rebuilt. We have tried different oil in the oilers but still are a problem. I can't imagine the doors being big enough for silage. It does take a few brains to unload them. I've seen many drivers stop, open the doors, and then try to go. Or open the front doors first, then the back ones. They are then stuck.

Side dumps are tough and take a beating. They don't take much of a hydraulic system to operate. They can flip over too, taking the truck with it. It's happened several times but not nearly as bad as an end dump. It's easy to get stuck unloading them as well. You need to turn the truck to the side you are dumping on (they can dump left or right), dump, then back up away from the pile.

End dumps are the easiest to end up on their side. They can take as much as 50 gallons of oil to get them all the way up.

You can build your own wetline for not much money. Use a fuel tank for oil and PTO/pump new is around $700. A few hoses and couplers is all it takes.

Have you tried unloading at 5+ mph but less than 10 getting stuck is no longer an issue with the side dumps then. When I first got mine I would unload stationary and get stuck ALOT. Then watched guys unloading on the go ( on the internet) and once I tried it the only time I unloaded stationary was when hauling large cement chunks. In that case backed away at an angle. Hauling crap I would go in 2nd or 3rd low and it worked great when unloading and keep truck and trailer in a straight line while dumping.

Not the best. A farmer got one of those to haul feedlot minute with years ago. Slow to unload. Hauled a load of compost with it and proceeded to make a huge compressed brick in the back of it that would not come out. He dug it out with his loader and then sold the trailer. Not nearly as slick as you would think.

Personally,,,, I’d go for an end dump with a small door in the tailgate. You can haul grain, lime, rock and your feed. Belly dump will be more or less useless for grain. Just remember,,,, this advice is Worth double of what you paid for it!!! LOL

No experience with a side or belly dump, don't even know of any around. A few belt trailers but some elevators won't accept them, too slow to unload. On an end dump I would recommend full frame & a liner. When we added a liner to ours (30') we could unload grain using 2 less stages on the hoist. Also allows lime to slide out better. Just watch where you unload, keep tractor & trailer straight & don't unload in a cross wind.

Wet kit isn't that expensive. We installed 3, had a mechanic install pto so it was shimmed properly, bought new pump, hoses & air towers & used ss tank, did the rest of the install ourselves. One truck we didn't have room for a separate oil tank so had one of the fuel tanks split, a plate welded in, & then welded back together. You'll want a pump that will raise the load with engine at an idle. IIRC, we use 1:25 pumps. We also put the control tower on inside of the seat so driver has to be in seat to operate, don't want them standing on the ground next to the truck in case it would go over.

When we dump at our bins the controls are at the door
I don't want to climb up into the cab every time to raise the box more

standing outside will give a great view of the trailer to see if it is going up perfect

For hauling silage, nothing but a side dump or belt trailer. End dumps hauling silage will without a single doubt wind up laying on the ground. Guys have trouble keeping 10 wheelers upright. A wide belt trailer can unload very fast. Not sure why an elevator would accept them. Probably faster than guys fighting the traps on old steel trailers.
