Went to grafton for kids wrestling yesterday evening. I got to explain to the kids what the dirty 30’s looked like, dirt drifting in the south road ditches. Saw one guy seeding east of drayton, nd and when we came home a guy was doing tillage at 11:30pm. Hard to believe it’s mid March!

Things are going to get worse. Not sure why so much fall tillage. Was bone dry. Seen a guy not far away wore about 1/2 inch out of the deere hitch pin doing fall tillage. Pulling so hard. Cant imagine their fuel bill

In the case of beet ground the fields that are mostly blowing are the unworked fields. Seems like on beet ground you need to dig it a little to pull the leaves up again

Yes it is dry here. Its too early to seed but soon some will decide it is go time. I did some field work today and hit frost where their was ground cover, the rest of the field was thawed and dry. I’m thinking if this weather pattern doesn’t change soon it will have a impact on spring wheat, canola, barely, flax and dry bean markets.

We are dry, on the edge of the very dry area. Dad is 81. He remembers seeding wheat a couple times in March. He says he remembers one time had a good snowstorm after some was seeded. Frost is coming out here.

I am trying to decide if the locally open winter (very little snow and mostly warm temps) is Mother Nature averaging out the last couple of really wet years, or are we going into a multi year drought. The radio weather dude says we’re about 7 month into whatever kind of dry spell is going on.

I’m worried. Our rain comes from the west, their really dry west of me. They have to get moisture before I do. But 2” or rain a month from now will go a long way.

I'll take dry seeding. Too often we end up swimming in mud. The last 15 years we seem to get 3 to 5 inch rains instead of a 0.5 to 2". Everyones comparing it to 2012. We had more snow/moisture in 2012 winter but it was warmer from January on. 2010 was hot and dry until August 1. Got 3.5 inches that afternoon and ended up totalling 26 inches from that day to Halloween.

I have seen some really dry planting conditions in the spring then turn around and have an OK growing season. You just never know.
Most of the time I think we kind of average out with rainfall but it's the timing that is important.

It’s funny how everyone forgets how it used to be before the wet summer’s of the early 90s. There is a reason devils lake got so big. It was wet for 20 years. Before that it was normal precipitation. Kind of like this. Never used to be row crops around Bismarck. Now that it’s been wet now all the pastures get plowed up. There is a reason they were pastures to begin with it was normal rainfall. Lol. I just think it’s funny now that it’s getting back to normal climate it’s all of a sudden dry???

not that is going to be like 1988 but do you remember 1988. Dirt blew all spring and no rain wheat only got a foot high or so very little yield. Field and road ditches filled with top soil. Blind Culitated beets so stop the blowing before the beets even came up. weather does seem to go in cycles and to tell you the truth we do better here on the dry side and not under water.

Yeah sorry buddy, this ain't normal......4-5" rainfall and 0 soil moisture is not the normal......we raise wheat, canola and peas, like we have for as long as I can remember. Haven't broke any pastures either, always cracks me up when someone from hundreds of miles away has the answers......

That's probably true there........I agree this is a good time of year to have a drought but after 7-8 months of 0 moisture I start to get concerned........not to mention the fact that IF we had enough moisture to get a crop in and growing like you guys do I wouldn't be worried either, we could go until june 1 fairly easily then, it's alot easier to not worry about being dry when you aren't dry.......

The drought we are in here is by far the worst I have ever seen. At least 1988 we had snow during the winter. There is ground right now I would not attempt to pull a shank through. Nothing but dry lumps. Top couple inches is like powder.

Never seen such little snow for the winter here. Soil in the field is loose just like it was last fall, not mucky and sticky like normal for this time of yr. The entire northern plains is in a full fledged drought. If the date wouldn't be march we'd be all done planting already for as dry as it is.

EDIT the wind yesterday didn't help anyone

The rumor keeps spreading that if we are not done seeding by April 16 you won’t finish. It is suppose to start raining and not stop and what’s left will be PP. I have a hard time believing that. The last good rainfall was around July 1 2020. We live in the land of extremes. There is no normal. I think they said 14 degrees above normal for March so far.

What we call dry and you guys call dry is laughable, but very dry pattern we have been in since last fall. Snow all kinda melted in place so maybe same as 1 -1 1/2 rain. Supposed to be a wet week here, we will see. We were on the edge of some poorer crops last year but ours were pretty good. It has been along time that we don’t haven’t any snow on the ground on March 20.
