Hastings, Florida
Some types of the creme hand cleaner [ like Go-Jo ] have gotten awful expensive to keep lying around. At times workers will use half a can just to clean a little grease off their hands. I have tried dish washing soap, bar soap, household cleaners, and just about everything else. What works for you guys to clean up with ?

Powdered laundry soap (Tide) and a stiff brush cleans better than any hand cleaner I have ever tried. Be prepared for it to sting a little if you have any cuts on your hands.

The best is the cheapest powdered laundry detergent you can buy. I can't use Tide cause for some reason I'm allergic to something in it. The roughness takes the grit and grime right off and it is much cheaper than any shop soap out there. We use the stuff in the 5 gal. buckets, and then when your done, you have a good bucket that didn't have oil in it.

I second Joe's. It is definitely better at cleaning, than any Fast Orange or dish soap I have tried. But it is kinda pricey. And on top of that, the tub it comes in encourages you to scoop out way more than you actually need to get the job done. I wish it came with some sort of pump dispenser.

We use ivory liquid dish soap. Put a little on straight, work it in, add a little water, work it in and rinse. Better keep a bottle of hand lotion on hand because it really seems to dry out your skin. Best I ever used was a can of Zep F 7 powder that someone gave me but I've never purchased any because I don't want to but a case of it.

Whatever Deere sells with their name on it has worked best for me. It is smooth, doesn't have pumice grit and actually softens (and cleans) your hands. It is similar to Go-Jo.

I like Fast Orange the best too. Have used ordinary motor oil in a pinch. The detergent in the oil does a great job. Then all you have to do is wash off the oil.

ORVUS livestock soap. It's a solid at colder temperatures, but at room temperature it liquifies. Then I put it in an old shampoo bottle and add just enough water to make it stay a liquid. Comes in a gallon jar, but by the time you cut it with a LITTLE water, it will last forever. And it's cheap.

Home made biodiesel glycerin soap. Don't want to sound like Martha Stewart, but you can make excellent soap from biodiesel glycerin. Canola glycerin makes a liquid soap that work well in pumps and soy glycerin makes a paste that can easily be scooped out of an open top container. Or biodiesel is also a very good solvent and will eat grease like crazy. Then just wash with home made soap.

Permatex (I think) Fast Orange. Good and not that expensive. Remind your help to apply and scrub before turning on the water to rinse.... it doesn't clean when wet.

The "smooth" cleaners with the consistency of custard didn't work for me -- the ingredients seperate and become useless.

Nobody has said it so I will, Sprayway aerosol glass cleaner works great on an intermittent basis. De-greases and everything, but it will dry your hands out. I generally keep a can around during that time of the year, spray it on, let it foam up and towel it off. I use it in the field if I'm without the service truck and some real water.

The foaming dish soap works well. When the wife bought some and put it by the kitchen sink I thought it was for hand cleaning because it worked so good. She informed me it was for dishes.

good luck

mix Dawn and Boraxo together in your hands, add a little water, and it will clean better than anything.  That is all Dad used for years and years.  I had to quit using it because of a skin problem the abrasiveness irritates, but I have yet to find anything as effective.

Boraxo. Its kinda like powdered laundry detergent, except that its designed for hands, so it doesn't dry them out. Its actually the stuff thats supposed to go in the dispensers on top those half-moon foot-operated sinks you see in a lot of schools. It starts out gritty to get the grease, but ends up liquified. Don't know about the cost, I ran it across it in the ag shop at school, and it works great.

Before starting a particularly dirty job hit your hands with a little liquid hand soap and rub it in dry (no water). Then clean up afterwords seems to go better.

Where do you find "Joe's"? Will need to try that.
