I was looking for a youth atv for my kids. I wanted a Honda, but came across some of the Chinese models that you can buy for $500 new. Are they any good at all? The kids will need bigger ones eventually, then I can get them something better.

Good luck. Or buy used name brand and sell it for the same money you paid for it.

You will have to work on it everytime they want to ride. The assembly has a lot to do with it, some places just dont do a good job putting them togather out of the crate, no loctite on bolts, no grease etc. The engines are usually a honda clone and can be pretty good. Buy 2 at a time so you have one for parts!

+1 every time they ride, I would have to fix something. After 3 months you had to hotwire it to start, put a different sprocket and chain on because it was trashed in a week. welding on the frame every couple days. I would never buy one of those things again. It is much cheaper to buy something decent- you will be much happier with a real one that is used.

Have seen lots of those cheap ATV's in garage and shop corners where the owners have given up on them. We bought a CanAm 90 about 6-7 years ago. guessing its still worth close to the same money we paid for it new.

Do you and your kids a favor and stay away from these things. They are dangerous and junk. I went that route about 10 years ago. It was hard from brand new to even keep the thing running. Was welding on it after about 10 hours of riding. They are just not built safe. Got rid of this one after a few months and bought a 90 Polaris Outlaw. That bike went through 2 kids and a lot of use. Paid $2400 new and sold it 7 years later for $1400. Was never in the shop.

Bought one from power sports max for daughter for Christmas.
110 cc, some assembly required not much just handle bars and front and rear racks and tires needed to be put on. She really likes it
Most of the holes in the frame for the racks didn't line up
I drove it once and noticed the Honda clone must not have a engine balancer can feel the vibrations real good at 20 mph
For what it is its ok, better than the electric (battery) versions

I would think 10-12. I'll ride our 90 sometimes to check cows if it's the only 4 wheeler at home. Might look dumb on it but it still moves along pretty good.

That's what we did. We bought my son one when he was 5. Ended up with a Tao Tao. I would check every important bolt and add loctite and the carbs aren't the greatest but it got him by until we found a used Honda 4 years later. We planned on buying my daughter a used Can Am or Polaris but everything we came across was almost at new pricing. Ended up getting her a new Tao Tao. She's 6 and we've had it a year and haven't had any issues yet. You definitely get what you pay for and I would look at a used name brand if at all possible. The good thing about the Chinese ones is that parts are available and they are cheap. An entire new carb is $15 on Amazon. Good luck.

They are expensive but please consider a Polaris mini rzr they are much safer as you sit really low down, like 6" off the ground, has seatbelts and a roll cage, I have a cheap 50cc 4 wheeler in the barn we bought used that has never been ridden, my 5 year old son (at the time) could never grasp the concept of pulling the brake lever where as a mini rzr has a foot pedal, all around much safer to ride and my two boys just love it.

If you have time to work on them there just ok. I had 2 that walmart sold about 15 years ago. my boys beat the snot out of them and they required me to weld, and keep carbs working. but they lasted until they were older and bought name brand. Last boy tried the same thing and not so good of luck, ended up buying Polaris 90 used for 1400. sold it a couple of years later 1200. The Polaris had sat for a couple of years and that ate up the carb. bought new one off ebay. Nice machine. Good luck.

Dad bought a rebuilt 50cc model and a used Polaris 50 and 90 for the grandkids to ride when they were younger. The 90 has been good, but both of the 50's have had issues. The 50 Polaris always needs played with to get running then runs good. The China always seems to have something working loose (mainly in the driveline).

I bought a cheap used Chinese 50 cc atv for my kids to see if they would like it and they did. Had that for about a year and after they liked ridding it I bought a Polaris 50cc & then this year bought a Polaris 90 cc as well for the kids to ride.

I bought the Chinese one for the simple reason being, if they didn't like it, I didn't have too much invested. Right or wrong, that's what I did.

On a side note, if I had to do it again, I would spend the money on the name brand ones since its easier to get parts and service. After having 3 name brand atv's (2 for the kids and one for myself) they are worth the money even though you spend more up front. Plus if you had to sell the name brand ones in a year or 2 you would most likely get close to what you paid for them back out of them.

Just my 2 cents worth.
Good Luck!

I bought a 05 polaris 50 and have had some issues. I thought I was buying a good one but it was made by Eton? I'd definitely buy a 4 stroke next time. I've got the Polaris running good now but spent almost what I paid for it to get there. Pd $500 and had to change stator and put a starter and battery in it. Also carb was gummed up and needed boiled out. Im looking to move up to a 90-125 cc this year.

If you decide to go with a Chinese made quad, at the minimum when you get it, take out every bolt, apply blue Loctite, and torque the bolts to spec. Better yet, replace all the small bolts with good one. Likely you will get your $550 worth out of it in fun.

I don't own any China bikes at the moment but really regret selling the Honda trail 70 knockoff that I had. I owned a couple of different China bikes and neither gave any trouble. I've had KTMs, BMWs, currently own Hondas and Yamahas. All of those are way better made, but the China bikes were still fun.

Do yourself a favor. Like everyone else says buy a name brand. More importantly get one with fuel injection. I have a Polaris 90 and it is very finicky. Always messing around with choke.

Been there.....done that Do yourself a favor and just spend the extra on a Honda, then sell it for as much as you paid for it or (in most cases....MORE)

Mine actually ran for about 3-4 hours of use before it broke down, and guess what.....NOBODY will work on them.

I went through this with my boys about 8 years ago when they were the rage. I had 3 quads and a mini 50cc motor bike. Well the bike wasn't bad it was cheap and the engine was a copy of a Honda engine. The 110 cc quad was .... a piece of junk and was poorly made. The 150 cvt drive quad was actually not bad but still like others said you had to keep an eye on things being tight. The 150 used a copy of a Honda skooter engine and it worked actually pretty good. On all of them the engines never gave grief it was all the other stuff. As others mentioned as soon as they got bigger I bought them a used Honda 250sx which was good but I did have to rebuild the darn rear end on that as the guy before must have ran with water in it!

There was a forum on ATV connection years back for Chinese atv's maybe check there and see which ones are popular and don't give much grief. I sold mine in a package deal to a family and they were quite happy for what they got. They all still worked but only one kid out of 3 had any interest in ATV's as time went on so they weren't being used. With all this being said with Chinese quads YOU are the service department!! Parts were available if not local online for sure.

Get a real one. I was thinking of doing the same thing as you a couple months ago, but got talked into getting a Polaris, and now that I have it, it was a no-brainer. I bought a 3 year old Outlaw 90 for $2300 that looks like a brand new one (new 110s are $3100). One of the articles I read said that everyone will be mad with a cheap one - the last thing you want is for your kids to be pestering you because they want to ride it and you either don't have time to fix it, or can't get parts to fix it. I am sure that this Polaris would wear out 3-4 of those cheap ones. After my kids outgrow it, it should still be worth half of what I gave for it (assuming they don't wrap it around a tree or something).

I'll be the odd one out. Been three years? With a 125cc Chinese. My oldest uses it for chasing cattle home among other things. I've welded the rack, tightened the chain about 5 times and checked the oil 3 times. I did replace the battery but after that I took battery out over winter. Guys will spend hundreds of dollars on an electric one, play around with a 50 or 90cc one. 225 lb guy can get up to about 20 mph on it.

If I had to do it over again I'd buy a Chinese youth razor.

I know guys that went used name brand ATV or snowmobile for the kids than pukea motor first year or two.

Bought a 90 and 110 China made quads used for my nieces for $100. Owner gave up on them years ago and wanted the garage space. Other than an ignition switch I've just set the valves and carbs. I wouldn't be scared of them the least bit. They're not hardly any more complicated than a lawnmower. I'm 6' 2 or 3 and 225lbs, the 90 has plenty to get me around.

+20 (or whatever number response this is), look for a used Honda trx90/125. Might have to go to ebay or craigslist and drive a bit, or do a bit of simple wrenching on it, but at least you can get parts and it will outlast the china one 100 fold.

If you really want a collector, look for an ATC 70 (3 wheeler), but ones of them in good shape bring good coin. And they also have a throttle limiting screw you can adjust.

I was looking for a youth atv for my kids. I wanted a Honda, but came across some of the Chinese models that you can buy for $500 new. Are they any good at all? The kids will need bigger ones eventually, then I can get them something better.

Bought my boy one when he was little. Governor went out, took off with him on it, ran onto my junk pile near the shop. Could have been terrible. He was alert enough to shut it down when it happened.

Mashed it with the backhoe when I got in that night. Never no more.

Bought him a little arctic cat 90, actually a suzuki engine, kymco running gear, and put 1,233,569.2 miles on it.

He is about to turn 17. We some bikes since didn't have odometers, some did, but we estimate he has in excess of 25K miles on various ATV's, and pretty much figured out the better bikes and tires. Now its trucks.
