Is there any other jack that works safely in place of a truck transmission jack?

Or any place that rents jacks?

If you use a real transmission jack otc has a plate that fits Eaton transmissions this is the best way to handle them.

I don't recommend this, but I heard this story once.

Guys at logging camp, needed to pull a tranny.

They removed shifter tower and added/bolted a steel plate with hook, over shifter hole,  rolled down the windows(drivers and passenger side), closed both doors, put a 6x6 post thru open windows, used a chain and a come-a-log to support the weight of tranny and clutch assembly(left clutch on tranny's input shaft), unbolted and lowered to the ground. (I'm sure it didn't balance perfectly, either)

Be forewarned, when you leave the clutch, on the tranny's input shaft, that really puts more weight upfront(forward) for that whole assembly, if someone tries that.(The advantage is: you don't have to pull tranny rearward very far, before you can lower it. Maybe 3")

Note: I've always had a true HD tranny floor jack, for my jobs.

There always this option, too. ($300)

One review says he pulled a RT14613 tranny (with a picture)

They do mention you must add oil before using, also, in some reviews.

The price is right but it scares me on that heavy of a trans.

Here's a couple more photos, of it, I found on the internet.

I don't know how close you are to a Harbor Freight Store, but if they had one(in stock), it might be worth looking at. (compare these photos(metal wise), to what GT500 was able to use)

We use that one on 10spds. Ours leaks down just fast enough to be a real pain getting the trans slid back on.

I used a lighter transmission Jack on my 10 speed when I replaced the clutch on my truck, it lifted the weight fine but it was kinda iffy as far as twisting on the lift arms of the jack, I made sure it was solid on the front uneven mount that I modified so that it couldn't shift around at all,,. I made sure the weight was even front to back and side to side before I pulled it free from the bell housing,, I wouldn't use a regular floor jack if that's what your wondering,,. Find someone that has a jack you can rent or use to be safe,, they are HEAVY!!
I blocked the semi up so I had room to crawl around underneath,, make your self some alignment pins when you put it back in, so much easier to get it to slide back together evenly,,

Quote: kinda iffy

Yes, that might be pushing the limit, on that jack's ability.

Glad, you got it done.

There are several brands and styles of jacks that are suitable for removing a tranny in a semi. While pricey, they will pay for themselves the first time you do the work yourself. You could check with truck shops and tool rental places. Have seen them at Sunbelt.

Have most often prlle them over a pit with a post style jack. Not hard to change a clutch, to swap the tranny, just lower it and roll it or the truck to get it out.

Creighton, NE
I just bought one like 4WD has in his post at harbor freight. Plenty good enough for occasional use but if I was wrenching everyday I’d probably buy a better quality one.

Used the harbor freight jack to pull and install a 13 speed, it worked, but very unstable. I would not recommend it.

Was it the 800 lb unit or the 2000 lb unit?

Were you on level concrete?

The 2000 pound jack on level concrete. We made it work. I don't know how much lighter a 10 speed is, but could be a big difference. If you look at napa they have the same jack rated for much less weight, I think a 1000 pounds.

That's about right for anything from Harbor Freight, divide the rating in half & it's ok...
I'm just happy that a truck transmission jack is something I will never have to use again. :)

Donnellson, IA. Makes saying here easier.
I bit the bullet several years ago and bought a otc with the eaton plate. We have used it on several jobs now and have even built other plates for pickup style transmissions. Very stable and the adjustments make it a one man job pretty easily.

If you don't need it immediately I'd try a want ad on craigslist. I've seen them on there before. Like above my choice would be an otc w/the eaton plate.

I'm all for saving money where you can but having one of those big twin counter shaft trannys teeter tottering on a make shift jack while I was under/around it would make me a little nervous.

Edit. I remember seeing some heavy tranny jacks at Vanderhaags before. Might be worth a call if you're halfway close to one.

Bought this jack a couple years ago at Fleetpride works great. Have pulled half a dozen truck transmissions with it.

No way would I skimp by on the jack these are heavy units. When things aren’t perfect and your wiggling the tranny all over the place I want it secure. Here is the jack with the plate it fits the transmission perfect and secure.

This is a picture of our transmission jack, it is a Walker. I gave $150 for it at a place that sells shop equipment. They took it in when they sold a new jack. It will handle our 10 speed transmissions and won't leak down.

When the Hutterites build their shop many years ago , They built a pit with a track . On the track they had a movable cart with surplus Bomb loader from the Air Force base.
Works really well. A bit over kill but a great way to remove anything from under a OTR truck.

I bought an OTC a few years ago, it's done way more than just pulled transmissions, easy to find lots of other uses for, neighbors like to borrow it too.
