Subject: Deutsch connector equivalents

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
I got an email today from Waytek (waytekwire.com) introducing a low cost alternative to genuine Deutsch connectors. I have no experience with this brand but hopefully they interchange and are cheaper.

There are a few different manufacturers making the Deutsch style of connectors now. I have been using the ones made by Amphenol and haven't had much trouble with them. I haven't used any of the connectors in your link but have brought some other styles of connectors manufactured by Molex and I don't remember there being any issue with them. Should be another good alternative to buying the Deutsch connectors. One thing I will say about the Amphenol Deutsch style connectors is that they used a very similar part number systems to the Deutsch connectors. I believe that the only part of the part number that is different is the prefix for the family of connectors but I don't remember for sure. After you look up a few of the Amphenol part number it becomes very easy to convert between the two different part numbers. I generally order the Amphenol connectors from mouser.

Y'all got a kit of these non-nosebleed-priced' interchangeable connectors?  I don't use a great deal of Deutsch but use a LOT of weatherpak, and feel that our use/repair of Deutsch would increase with a reasonably-priced repair kit.  Those $500-600 ones just seemed crazy expensive.

I have been getting the Amphenol ones from Waytek for years, they are fully interchangeable with Deutsch. They only used to offer DT and DTP now they have DTM and one other type as well.

Maybe they are switching vendors to Molex for more offerings? It 'says' they're compatible, but does NOT specifically say they are Deutsch compatible as the Amphenol ones they sell DO.

Those Molex ones don't readily show up on their web site catalog, the Amphenol ones still do.

As for sets, I purchased my DTM set from Batts Racing (Deutschconnector.com) because it was a good set for he money at the time. I believe for my other sets I purchased the Amphenol ones from Waytek from the start and just built my own kits. I just bought a tackle box looking case for each of my DT and DTP kits. For my crimp machined DTP pins and females, I got a set off eBay I think that included a pair of the GOOD Deutsch crimpers for less than I could source just the crimper or terminals elsewhere. I know for my plug covers and brown and green 12 terminal connectors, I sourced elsewhere. Mouser or Allied or maybe even DigiKey. I can't remember.

Also Amazon and EBay are good places to look once you know what you want.

Also I wouldn't recommend the sets with the DT and DTM crimpers plus the 3 release tools. They are less versatile than the good Deutsch tool. Wire sizes are not able to be adjusted for with them the way the Deutsch tool is. I also never (or rarely) need to release a wire from the back of the connector. I take them apart from the front. For me it's easier than rooting around blindly from the back of the connector.

I would get the flat tool that Waytek sells for relasing the terminals. It's cheap and works well. I have several. The hook is also handy for pulling out the terminal lock inside the shrouds.

I wouldn't waste my time with the stamped ends (Waytek sells both, the stamped ones ARE Less expensive) get the proper tool and spend for the machined pins and females. I had trouble with wires breaking at the crimp and also pulling out of the terminals. Deutsch are harder to disconnect than Weather Pack, so with my big fat hands I pull too much on the wires.

I have also used the Amp compatible for quite a few years. I also prefer the machined terminals over the stamped. They stay perfectly round so they are easier to insert. I think you get a lot better hold also. I did have the Deutsch tool at my old job and it was very slick. The screwdriver type release tools works great for all the square connectors. When working with round connectors you pretty much need the ones to release from the wire end. It you get the plastic ones, you may as well get a couple of each size you need.

I quit considering Deutsch connectors to be expensive years ago (as long as you don't buy them from terminal supply co...damn!) In the big picture, when the alternative is replacing the entire cable, they are cheap.

That being said, I've used some amphenol connectors made to be compatible, and found them to work just as well.
