Last year I got a single 71 unit for planting sweet corn. I have a couple of different plates and was wondering what you guys thought would be the best. I could never get a real good stand, had too many skips. I wasn't having trouble with the drive because the plate was always turning. Thanks.

There is an art to fitting the seed size to the plate.

These days many companies don't do a great job sorting seed by size, since most planters use fingers or air pressure to singulate kernels.

So even if you work at it, might not be able to do real well.

Wrinkled sweet corn seed is even harder to fit in the plate.

Generally you can sort out the width of the notch in the plate to the width of the kernel you have. If kernels are too fat they don't fit in the notch and you will skip a lot.

The trouble is the oblong length, if you pick a plate too short the seed doesn't fit in and it skips, and if you pick too long with poorly graded corn then two small ones try to fit in and double plant.

With sweet corn depth might be an issue too, if it plants doubles might need a different backing plate.

Make sure your cutoff and knocker are in good shape. Along with make sure the plates are not wore out. Here are a couple charts to give you a starting place and you will have to fine tune it from there
Edit
I always order a little extra seed to help keep the hopper fuller seems to help with small amounts of seed

You can pull up the manuals from yetter's website. They still make the 71. I have 2 I keep around just in case...
