Subject: hole size to drill for 1/2" NPT tapping?


Needing to drill and tap a hole in a transmission housing casing for a oil return line. Was wondering what size hole to drill to tap for 1/2" NPT. Also what size hole to drill for 3/8" NPT tapping.

Idaho		Don't know what your up to, but why not use the all ready existing drain plug hole and not risk cracking the possibly thinner transmission case.

Is there a straight thread tap that could then could be chamfered to an ORB? Thus eliminating the expansive/wedge force of NPT.
