East central Iowa

I've got a kit to rebuild a water softener.  The body appears to be some sort of black plastic that's quite hard.  I know you've seen that type of material, it's not glossy but dull and looks like it might have strands of something in it.

I have several O rings to put on valves and some O ring seals.  I've had bad luck just pushing O rings in and trying silicone hasn't worked very good either.

What would be a better product to use to lubricate O rings?

I believe plumbers use a lubricating silicone.

Vaseline?

That's what I used on ours.

Silicone grease. Doesn't take much. I use it for hose connections, too. Get at any hardware store in small container.

I have used about everything, especially in situations when you have nothing else around, but here is my most successful list:

Vaseline, silicone grease, dish soap ( Dawn is my favorite ) , regular multi purpose grease, corn head grease, mineral oil, hyd oil, engine oil, baby oil, olive oil, Crisco, .
But the ones I have the best performance for like hydraulic repairs is Lucas Oil stabilizer, STP, or Motor Honey.
In water soluable situations, my go to is KY Jelly or any brand personal lubricant, really works slick and is very slippery when just a little water is added.
Murphy's oil soap or paste is another decent one,
I would caution using petroleum based lubricants in water soluable situations, as some of those o rings can be damaged due to swelling and being incompatible with petro based lubes.

Of all the ones suggested the only one I'd want to eat is the vegetable oil. I've used butter before on something like this.

Use the silicone grease posted earlier. That is what it is made for. I just bought a can of it just the other day for the rotary joint on a garden hose reel.

Hidden down in the package was a small tube of silicone grease.  I used that with no problems.

Thank you for all the  input and I'll keep it in mind for future O ring use.

Make sure you get silicone grease that's rated for home water fittings. Some silicone grease is quite toxic.
