Subject: Any tricks to filling small tires with foam?

Manitoba, Canada
For those who have filled small tires with expanding foam from a can are there any tricks to knowing how much to put in? I imagine I will only get one shot at it so I want to get it right. If too much is sprayed in would it matter? I want to spray foam the small tires on the swing auger mover. Tired of having them go flat all the time. TIA

I always took the tires to a repair place to be filled with foam. Works good for hay Tedder tires. It is fairly costly though. Never heard of anyway to do yourself

Chebanse, IL.....

I haven't heard of "do-it-yourself" foaming either, but maybe it's out there. Our local tire shop does them, but then lets the tire sit undisturbed for 2 days so the foam will set up evenly. It's not cheap, but we've had all the tires done on our swing-arounds, wing tires on chisel plows (wing tires ALWAYS go flat!), and a few other pieces of machinery. Also did the wheels on a 3 btm IH 60 plow. Lots of guys seem to bolt a wheel weight on the frame, foaming the tires looks much cleaner.

I tried it. Just ended up with goo inside tire. I dunno why. No air to cure?

I tried it once. Had a little left over and probably didn't get it half full. Pushed the side of the tire in made a really big mess since it was expanding in the outside of the tire. Tried pushing more in with my fingers, got mad and left it. Came back next day and it was full. That must have been 2 years ago. Mitchco

WHATEVER you do.... DO NOT get that nasty stuff on you. Wear some disposable rubber gloves or something.  There is nothing known to man except time that will take it off skin. FWIW I've never tried it but don't see why it wouldn't work if you can get it evenly in the tire.

Take the valve stem out and use the small tube on the can and put into valve stem. As fast as you can empty as much of the can as possible. Put valve stem back in. I have one gauge wheel on my baler pickup that I have always had problems with. Fill with air every week. With the foam is lasted the whole season. I see some places you can buy solid small tires. I am going to look at that.

The key to getting the tire completely full of foam is to put the foam in at the bottom and drill a vent hole at top of tire for the trapped air to escape. All the commercially foamed tires I have had done came back with a nail plugging the vent hole, so I know that's how they do it.

Can you buy this foam at an auto parts store. Is this some special tire foam or just the regular foam you use to seal cracks?

Ah! Now that makes sense. I know it can be done because a local fellow told me a while back he had done it and it worked. Just regular foam insulation. Not sure if it was the high or low expansion though. Maybe I will give him a call. I just figured that there was probably lots of people who had done it but maybe that's not the case. It's not something that I would do to a tire that is used in the field or road but all those darn little tires on the swing hopper have to do is stay round! I like the idea of drilling a hole in it.

When you take a tire to the tire shop to get it foam filled they don't use foam like insulation the use a liquid rubber that cures into a semi hard rubber compound just like a solid rubber tire. If you use a spray foam can of insulating foam to fill a tire it is not the same stuff. When the tire flexes with insulating foam inside it breaks down and turns to mush. Buy a solid rubber tire or take your tires to a dealer that fills them with rubber.

Call those folks they don't have it listed on their site but they fill pivot sprinkler tires with foam somehow. They are supposed to do one for me soon.

Expanding foam is not what they use for tires. The stuff in tires is really more of a flexible solid. Its very very dense stuff which expanding foam is not. the expanding foam will break down and turn into a mess.

Ok. I knew that expanding foam is not what they use but it seems to have worked for a local guy. Like many have said though, maybe it won't last very long and break down. That does make sense. It sounds like I may as well look for solid tires or find a place that will fill these professionally. Thanks everyone!

Is it a tube type tire? Put a heavy dose of slime in it. They make it for tube type and tubeless tires. I have a 4 wheeler with the original tires on it since 1995 that's had slime in them since new and still hold air today.

They have tubes in them now. That is a good idea. No harm in trying that first and maybe that will be all I need to do. Thanks!

We use old cultivator gauge wheels on our swing hoppers, they work much better for us than those small tires that always go flat.

Well for a light load like that it may work for a little while, it may be a mess, you could always try. I would price getting them filled though to see if its even worth the time to try an alternative.

TRC tire sealant works pretty good for sealing small leaks, it's not the cheapest stuff though.

If punctures are the issue I would get them filled, if bead leaks and slow leaks otherwise are the issue, you could try a good sealer.  Some people also have good luck just filling the tire with washer fluid, they will sometimes seal better with the liquid than air alone.

I wouldn't waste the money putting Slime brand in a tube. Even the better stopleaks don't work very well in tubes compared to directly into the tire. The one time I put Slime in a tire, I ended up removing the tire a couple days later and the stuff was down to a green liquid slightly thicker than antifreeze.

Genseal will eventually separate into fluff balls and green liquid, but this takes a long time.

I haven't tried the TRC pink.

TRC says you have to remove any talc/baby powder from a tube tire before putting the sealant in.
