Trying to get the starter off our 99 379 Peterbilt, C-15 6NZ motor if that matters, can not get the top bolt broke loose... don't really have enough room to use the breaker bar before it either hits the motor or the frame... actually got my 3/4" impact down in there but had quite a long extension hooked to it and it won't budge it either.... anyone have any good ideas? Thanks guys.

Sometimes they put Loctite on starter bolts. Can you get to it to put some heat on it and melt the loctite out. That would be the best bet.

Take a long punch and give it a hit on the head.

Heat and if that doesn't work a bigger impact. We had same problem a couple years ago, ended up twisting bolt off. After starter heated bolt cherry red let cool and took bolt out with vice grips.

That was my last resort.... there are a lot of cables/wires right around that area that I was afraid to put heat in there but might have to make up a little heat shield or something to keep the cables/wiring harness safe while I heat it up.... I think that's my only option.

Thanks Guys.

I have heard of guys using a long extension with impact wrench and pound on extension while running impact wrench. I have never done this but my neighbor did with luck.

Can you reach in there with your air chisel? put a punch bit in and let it hammer on casting where bolt is, or on impact socket. while someone else runs impact. had that work for me a time or 2

Two things:

#1: If you had the actual CAT 5/8" 12 pt. swivel starter removal tool, then you would just add enough extensions to it, to get "passed" the front of the starter and then USE a very long breaker bar = much stronger than any impact, once "extensions" are being used = I've removed plenty "upper starter bolts" this way.

#2 Get the BEST quality of 5/8" 12 pt combination wrench, and put the "box end" on the head of the starter bolt. Now, fist try to "double up" with a second long comb. wrench , for leverage (just to break loose)  BUT if the "Angles" don't work out, for that idea(two wrenches) then use a BIG 4-6 foot prybar, against framerail, and pry against your BEST 5/8" combination wrench that is on starter bolt. I've even used a "stubby combination wrench" with a huge prybar to do this.

Note: Certain brands of 12 pt box ends, are "cut" differently, in relationship of a 12 pt notch to its handle = comparing different brands may assist you to "position" the wrench on the starter bolt.

Example: MAC is different than Snap-On

I don't have the swivel starter removal tool... just a 12 pt 5/8" socket that I was using. What does the tool look like?

That was going to be my next try was the 5/8" 12 pt box end wrench doubled up.... the pry bar is a good idea. Will have to try that too.

Thanks 4WD and everyone else for the suggestions.

The tool says APEX on it. ( I only know that CAT sells them, it is in their BIG tool book) It is 1/2" drive.

Did one last week, not my first rodeo, had one bolt that I couldn't budge, cut head off bolt to gain access to bolt, now you have some room to work, if starter has a aluminum spacer, like this one did, this is normally where issue starts, starter bolts are not cheap, about 20 bucks, each, Scott.
