We have a Cat 289c on the way. Dealer has it coming with a bolt on smooth edge 78" bucket... The machine is 78" exterior width. Do we want a wider bucket?

Thinking we will also want a bucket with teeth at some point as well?

You will definitely want a tooth bucket, and a grapple, and a backhoe, and a material bucket and pallet forks, and, and, and......

Seriously, the tooth bucket will be your weapon of choice more than likely. My skid steer came with a smooth bucket and I rarely use it. You might consider getting an 80" tooth bucket because the 78" will seem pretty tight when you get to digging very deep.

I have pallet forks and the bolt on smooth edge bucket coming with it. I have an excavator already and plan to get a root rake with grapple as well.

I can get a bolt on tooth bar but its around $800 which seems high... I would rather have a separate bucket that's hd with welded teeth I think.

Got both tooth and smooth bucket. Way different critters both have their place. I vote bigger bucket 80-84" and spring for a removable tooth bar if available and you don't want two buckets around. Old skid loader had one, was a pain to change but cheaper than two buckets.

I would want a minimum of 84". On 100 HP track machines the tooth bars do not hold up well. While I was having my 84" bucket rebuilt, I bought a 90" Berlon tooth bucket. It's their heaviest bucket, but it sure flexes alot.

I have a 277C with a 78" and wish it was a 84". I rented a CAT root grapple this fall it was a 84" and it worked great, it is a fence cleaning machine!

I never seen much difference between a tooth to a smooth bucket. I have a 80 inch low profile smooth edge, and a 84 inch tooth bucket for my T300. It seems like the tooth bucket just wants do dig in like crazy and makes it hard to grade with.

I figured a smooth bucket would be best for grading... But will the tooth bucket dig a lot easier?

You want an 84" bucket with a good straight edge. You want holes in it for putting some teeth on as well when you feel it is needed. Dpn't buy a bolt on tooth bar.

Later on, you will learn that you will likely want another bucket with or without teeth and possibly a different width, or different back side for more capacity or possibly better visibility. When you buy a second bucket is when you can determine which bucket you want dedicated to the teeth/no teeth tasks and you will no more when the time comes from your own experience.

Same width as the tracks is fine, but I think 84" works best. I would recommend a 4in1 bucket with bolt on teeth. Best of all worlds in one.
