Subject: OSB or Metal??

East Central Missouri
I am in the process of finishing the inside of my 48x70 insulated shop (all steel red iron building). I am really undecided about lining the lower portion of the walls with corregated metal or 7/16 OSB. I know this has been discussed before, but just concerned about a couple things. There will be a definite area where welding/cutting and fabricating will take place incuding a large air compressor. I ideally would like to put metal around this area, but concerned about noise when I start pounding on metal and the compressor starts running. Obviously the metal would be ideal from a fire hazard, but if I prime and paint the OSB well wouldn't it be safe from sparks? The metal is twice the cost, which is not that big of a deal, but if the OSB will work and less noisy, easier to attach shelves and such to...why not use it? Just looking for what some others have done and their success or challenges. Thanks for all input.

We did the bottom 8' in plywood and then metal for the rest. The wood is more forgiving for bumps and dings and easier to mount stuff to the walls. Painted it the same color as the metal. Looks pretty good.

Doing it again I would put metal in the bottom-and then perforated metal after first 8 ft.

The nice thing about metal is you can wipe it down every year and it looks like a new shop again-also more fire resistant...why temp fate.

Learn from my fail and put all power runs in conduit OUTSIDE of the wall where it can easily be extended-may look cleaner initially but as soon as you want to expand it is a PITA.

thanks for your input. I already figured on the exposed conduit for the exact reason you said.

what do you wipe it clean with? Perforated metal for better sound absorbtion?

Yes perforated for sound.

I just wipe it down with some orange citrus cleaner or similar stuff. Actually hire the kids to do it-for some reason they like that job. Couple rags and it goes fast.

Usually the metal panels just screw to the bottom and the middle purlin to attach, and they are rigid enough. With OSB it will require additional framing, time and material. OSB by itself just screwed to the purlins will be very flimsy.

I used perf metal in the ceiling and 7/16 on the walls, cheaper and it pressed in the insulation better.

Maybe metal upper AND lower around welding/"sparks and smoke" area, and OSB the rest of the bottom. I'd use thicker than 7/16, at least in some places.Actually I'd spring for "real" plywood.

Ever try to CLEAN the perforated metal? Ever PRICE it? Plywood painted looks nice and soaks up the noise like perforated steel, maybe even better.

The plywood is really nice for installing shelving, hangers, hose and light reels, etc.

We had the inside lined with tin in our shop when they built it. It's not perforated but when pounding on stuff it's really not that bad. We were told as long as the inside roof is not lined with tin the echo wouldn't be bad.

If you are worried about fire around a welding area then using 5/8" sheetrock is a lot better than OSB or plywood. and probably perforated metal. Or put on the sheetrock first and then protect the areas where is apt to be damaged with plywood or cement board.

On my Astro building, they used tongue and grooved, 3/4" plywood on the bottom 8'. Painted it gray. I only had them do half of the building. Wish I did it all. Looks really sharp against the white tin, easy to hang stuff on wall, very durable, won't dent, keeps the noise down, does not show dirt and looks very finished. I weld in that area, but there is so much other stuff along the wall, sparks are not a issue because I am not that close to the wall.

1/2 osb with frp over it. Frp has some noise redu tion properties that are an advantage over metal. Frp is also easier to cleN and stays white forever. Frp also takes more abuse than steel us with osb as a backing you can mount things anywhere.

We are building a smaller shop 30X36X10, 2X6 walls, steel on the outside. But havent decided what to use for the interior liner. I was thinking if we are using 2X6's, why not run the steel liner horizontal? It might look different, but would save some time and material.
